about the existence of the forkiverse, a fediverse service set up by the folks behind the Hard Fork and Search Engine podcasts;

nytimes.com/2026/01/13/podcast

@mapacheMaho 🦝🍻 wrote an intriguing blog post riffing off this to discuss the ways using different services for an account changes the experience of using the fediverse;

hachyderm.io/@mapache/11593562

I suspect this is because each fediverse service has a community with different range of interests, and therefore sees a different slice of the verse.

Today a little voice in my head said, "Maybe the reason you write such thorough unit tests is because your unstable childhood makes you pathologically unable to trust things that you haven't personally verified in excruciating detail."

I guess at least I've found a way to derive value out of my neuroses.

obviously I have my own issues but I am glad none of them are:

1. desiring expensive electronic devices to do a social status signal

2. desiring an expensive address to do a social status signal

3. consuming what is popular because it is popular as part of retaining a social standing, regardless of whether I like the popular thing or not

@reiver ⊼ (Charles) :batman: shared the below article:

NodeBB v4.8.0 — Crossposting, federated moves, API changes, and bug fixes!

julian @julian@community.nodebb.org

Hello from Canada! :flag-ca:

We're a week behind the planned release, but we're dropping v4.8.0 today, containing some changes to our ActivityPub handling, along with a new API route, and bug fixes.

Crossposting

As briefly introduced in my earlier topic on cross-posting, NodeBB v4.8.0 supports cross-posting of topics between categories. More importantly, it means topics from other remote categories can now be added to local categories, which is another way to bring conversations to your local users.

What is the best oldschool software one can self-host on a small server?

"Best" as in some tradeoff of the following:

* bugfree (or not many bugs)
* safe, as in no or no discovered CVEs
* features for users, mods and admins
* maintainability
* safe, as in allows invite-only, and maybe review posts before being actually visible

Background is, that I have been thinking about hosting one for a long time, but it would probably be only for friends and friends of friends.

@inthehandsPaul Cantrell I think, in general, that's what the coverage about Minnesota is missing about community - the collective action, the mutual aid, etc. These are distributed, bottom up, and emergent. There's not the singular heroic figure to interview, no canonical organization directing it according to a roadmap. It moves and feels different because it is fundamentally different than how most western narratives portray change happening.
