Storm Chaser by David Mayhew, 2017

A Visual Tour of Severe Weather

The beauty of the sky is beyond comprehension. Never the same twice, it makes for unique images that depict a fleeting moment in time. In this book, David Mayhew (Fort Collins, CO) strives to show the full array of Mother Nature's moods from the color palette and limitless textures that are conjured up.

Forecasting for skies, night or day, is as much an art as a science since weather is a living ecosystem, forever evolving.

Adapting to its whim, David drifts wherever the wind carries him, feeling out the best light in order to capture an image that ideally depicts sensational displays of beauty. Mayhew's photographs show the dramatic skies of tornadic storms and severe weather, the serenity of a sunset, the fascination of unique formations clouds can conjure up, and the mystery of the mesmerizing northern lights. If the purpose of art is to create an emotional response in the viewer, then surely readers will see why the skies are his muse.

Earthset from Orion

Eight billion people are about to disappear in this snapshot from space taken on 2022 November 21. On the sixth day of the Artemis I mission, their home world is setting behind the Moon's bright edge as viewed by an external camera on the outbound Orion spacecraft. Orion was headed for a powered flyby that took it to within 130 kilometers of the lunar surface.

Velocity gained in the flyby maneuver was used to reach a distant retrograde orbit around the Moon. That orbit is considered distant because it's another 92,000 kilometers beyond the Moon, and retrograde because the spacecraft orbited in the opposite direction of the Moon's orbit around planet Earth. Swinging around the Moon, Orion reached a maximum distance (just over 400,000 kilometers) from Earth on 2022 November 28, exceeding a record set by Apollo 13 for most distant spacecraft designed for human space exploration. The Artemis II mission, carrying 4 astronauts around the moon and back again, is due to launch as early as February 6.

Gut by Giulia Enders, 2015

The Inside Story of Our Body's Most Underrated Organ

Our gut is almost as important to us as our brain and yet we know very little about how it works. Gut: The Inside Story is an entertaining, informative tour of the digestive system from the moment we raise a tasty morsel to our lips until the moment our body surrenders the remnants to the toilet bowl.

No topic is too lowly for the author's wonder and admiration, from the careful choreography of breaking wind to the precise internal communication required for a cleansing vomit. Along the way, the author provides practical advice such as the best ways to sit on the toilet to have a comfortable bowel movement, how clean your kitchen should be for optimum gut health, and how different laxatives work. She tells stories of gut bacteria that can lead to obesity, autoimmune diseases, or even suicide, and she discusses the benefits of dietary supplements such as probiotics. This book is a fascinating primer for anyone interested in how our ideas about the gut are changing.

Kia ora fedizens, a few months ago I was shoulder-tapped to take on stewardship of fediverse.party. One of a bunch of websites that aim to gather lots of useful info about the fediverse in one place. This is a project I've been a casual contributor to for years, and I really want to see it maintained. So I said yes.
