What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Random reminder that among the other things they can't get right, enterprise firewalls often have application fingerprinting or app IDs or whatever they want to call it where it tries to identify a network protocol and it's just bad. They're all bad. Yes, including that one. So please don't use them for anything important like, say, firewall rules.

afaik this paper's main suggestion for how to combat "contest cultures" (admitting you don't know something is seen as weak) and the "brilliance trap" (there's an attitude that people are either "brilliant" or "not") is to prioritize a

"strong culture of shared learning and [emphasize] that all people can belong in software development and should have the chance to succeed"

building a culture of shared learning is my literal favourite thing so I'm very into this

@b0rkJulia Evans in my experience, as someone who is often a "senior engineer," one of the most effective things I can _personally_ do to combat this and encourage a learning attitude is to be quick to say "I don't know," and quick to admit when I'm wrong.

People really do pick up on behaviors like this from "senior" types (or their absence!).

I say this mostly in case anyone else in a similar position reads this thread and goes "but what could I possibly do to shift the culture in this direction"

I have several projects where, if I want to continue them, I have to do some "crossing the line" activities. Things I personally have decided I will Never Do, because of the horrors.

But there's so much cool stuff I could do if I just WROTE AN EMULATOR or A GCC/LLVM BACKEND!

☞ Bruce Springsteen - Streets Of Minneapolis (Official Audio) youtu.be/wWKSoxG1K7w

『Streets of Minneapolis』

「ICE(移民税関捜査局)を今すぐ撤退させろ」の叫びの中

(And, yes, creating your own frontier level model is out of the question for individuals right now, but as always, as the tech improves and things get cheaper, it’s more broadly accessible. Building your own small model is feasible and the size keeps going up as time goes on)

Just uploaded my bachelor's thesis to GitHub!

In it, I detail how I created a bootstrap chain for @nixos_orgNixOS which builds the whole system from a small hand-auditable binary seed.

What’s everybody’s read on the attempt at a second general strike this Friday?

From where I sit, it feels much more like a social media action than the on the 23rd; I don’t see the unions or same kind of organizing infrastructure behind it.

On the other hand, apparently it •is• getting a lot of social media traction in some circles? “All I see posts about,” said one student.

What’s the read from where you sit? Does this one have legs? Or is it a day to keep our powder dry?

I think there's something we have to explore in terms of the doomerism where people expect the US to be Exactly Nazism 2: there is a claim that they are nazis, and this is a true claim. But they are nazis in the sense of "people who happen to be really into hitler for some goddamn reason" - the same sense that, idk, Varg and Douglas P are nazis. This doesn't necessarily mean that the US has been consolidated as a fascist state, which clearly has not yet happened, if that had happened there would be some pretty clear signs ("Bruce Springsteen living in exile in Tokyo" might be one, "Zohran Mamdani arrested, denationalized and deported to Uganda" would be another). And, of course, it might be - and probably is - their ultimate goal! But it hasn't happened *yet* which means that there's still time to do something about it, which is obviously good. It means there's still hope. But certain people, in trying to seek support for their claim that they are nazis, start looking for any terrible news that they can use to support that claim, which means there's an ecosystem of doomer fake news that tries to make you believe that, for example, CECOT is a literal death camp. But it's not, and this fake news is harmful because the people who were deported to CECOT were alive, and it was possible to free them. And you wouldn't free someone that you think is dead! Likewise, the detainees at Alligator Alcatraz that went missing - obviously we do need to figure out what happened to them! But you *categorically do not assume that people who are disappeared are dead, until you know for sure, which usually means literally finding the body* And you do this because nobody searches for the dead, you search for people who might still be alive, and these people might still be alive, and we need to figure out what happened to them.

@julieofthespiritsHegelian Princess Agreed top to bottom.

A side branch: I’m newly frustrated by the way “concentration camp” has become synonymous with “death camp.” The distinction matters because the Nazis operated concentration camps for many years before they turned them into death camps; the original official plan was to •deport• all the Jews from Europe. It turned into mass killing only when deporting that many people proved impossible. And by missing that distinction and forgetting that history, we fail to notice that (1) DHS is most certainly building and operating concentration camps, (2) they are not death camps yet, and (3) this trajectory is exactly how death camps eventually came about under the Nazis. So we miss both the urgency •and• the possibility of action!

Welcome to Wednesday on Wednesday where it is Wednesday all the time! Wednesday is an 8 year old tortoiseshell cat. She is blind and currently living in Illinois with flipping.rocks/@loren . Her interests are laying in sunbeams, playing with her new toys (thank you to those who have helped settle her in, we really appreciate your support), and sniffing the corners. Follow here for lots more pictures of this very sweet and silly cat.
