with code this is all much easier to control because you just do it on a case-by-case basis. the bluesky client codebase uses mostly denormalized data fetching, but there's a layer that shadows mutations inside stale trees so you don't see like button saying different things on two mounted tabs

you can't refetch the whole page because it would reset scroll position, not always possible to do literally (maybe you're a 1000 rows down etc), could generate new content. so surroundings need to be stable-ish. but some parts may need to refetch. and some need to mirror new data inside stale trees

i've checked that the model can work for mutations, where you "log into" every component origin that needs oauth. don't want the "browser" to have any permissions beyond its own needs this works but you need some way to invalidate a partial tree after mutation. expectations around this are subtle

i just realized that since "gallon" is different between US and UK, then the fuel efficiency figures measured in mpg must be 20% different as well

one interesting aspect of being a de-facto infrastructure provider (i maintain a lot of shit that fits that bill) is that some of the time—not very often, but it's noticeable—i will end up providing infrastructure to people i really dislike, or to people who hate me and try to undermine me, etc

i have concluded long ago that the only way to deal with this is to continue providing services in exactly the same capacity as if it was anyone else when this happens so long that the conflict is between them and me. doing anything else goes against the purpose of me maintaining the infra, which is to say, public interest

(i do sometimes take action against people who use my infrastructure in a way that is offensive to the public, but all of those cases so far were simple ones like spam or non-targeted harassment, not something i had to actually think about)
