What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

A (slightly indirect) co-worker is retiring tomorrow, and so he has been steadily decommissioning his sysadmin's collection of machines over the past while, sending my group a stream of 'please remove this from DNS & DHCP & etc, it's gone' update requests. Seeing these go by is giving me feelings, especially with the final few today (his most central machines).

Maybe it's a bit like the famous scene from 2001 of HAL having its circuit boards pulled.

The Crowd Supply campaign for the GameTank is about 33% over and 31% funded.

I don't really know marketing. I'm just an engineer who made a fun thing and wants to share it with anyone in world who'd appreciate it.

My markup on the console in this campaign is negligible.

If you like what I'm doing:
- Backing is a huge help
- Backing with extra carts is a huge help
- Sharing this to other weirdos like me who spend time energy and money on retro dev is a huge help

Canadians know monopolies are driving up prices. A public option for groceries would give people a real alternative and bring costs down immediately. It’s affordable, practical, and within reach.

Read our plan for Public Options: avilewis.link/public_options

Want to see a cost breakdown and some solid modelling for how public grocery stores could work in Canada? Read a detailed new report from the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives: avilewis.link/ccpa-public-groc

Heads to users - I've moved the Elisp sources to a dedicated folder today (`lisp/`), which makes the repo layout leaner and is common practice for bigger Elisp projects in general (e.g. Magit). This shouldn't affect the MELPA packaging, but if you notice any problems - let me know. More details github.com/clojure-emacs/cider

Take a deep breath.

One day after launch of our campaign for Hootsuite to drop their contract to provide ICE "social listening" tools– this letter.

Their CEO writes she is glad people are "showing up" and "being vulnerable", but they'll keep the ICE contract. Their ToS prohibits individual surveillance, and that's enough.

hootsuite.com/letter-from-irina

Is that enough to anyone else?

A reminder, Hootsuite is a B corp- legally required to consider the impact of their work on the public.

Does selling "social listening" tools to 2026 ICE, and angling for a multi-million dollar contract, strike you as B corp behaviour?

If it doesn't, speak your mind here:

Minnesota Dems are trying to elect as governor, the County Attorney that refused to charge Derek Chauvin for his entire career of brutality against Black Minnesotans, and refused to charge almost every cop in the police department that is on the most racist 1% of police departments in North America?

Then if Black Minnesotans don't turn out to vote for her in record numbers, a bunch of white people are going to jump on BlueSky and Twitter and Mastodon and Facebook to curse out Black people, and express their homicidal fantasies about how Black men and Somali immigrants now deserve whatever is about to happen to them.

Chart showing Minnesota has "More Racial Disparities in deadly force than 100% of Depts"

That is not a good accomplishment.

Only 19% of Minnesota is Black, but 75% of people killed by police are Black.
