What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Jialin Ding, expert in databases and systems, has joined the dept.

“To most people, databases are kind of opaque, because they work behind the scenes,” Ding said. While a typical user doesn’t interact with databases directly, they power nearly every application.

Ding’s research focuses on using machine learning techniques to tailor data storage and indexing to the unique needs of the user or the application, in order to optimize speed and efficiency.

this is shaping up well enough that i think i can can Post about it now:

working on an activitypub-aware reverse proxy to handle http signatures/authorized fetch (and, in the future, caching, though that's not there yet) on your behalf. primarily intended to absorb the load of large federation bursts for the underlying software, but also frees you from having to reimplement http signature validation yourself

supports both rsa-sha256 and ed25519 over the cavage draft. handles multiple keys per actor. will handle blind key rotations whenever i get around to it. may add support for the the new http signature rfc if there's a Reasonable library available

i have a few more things in mind but i need to finish the basics first

Being DevRel occasionally gives you glimpses into how people treat service staff. A guy today got mad because I didn't reply to him for _two hours_. These hours were during my evening. He cited that I was replying to other people, so he's entitled to my attention right?

These same people will weaponise therapy language to try and get what they want. I feel bad for people who can't simply block them.

카메라에서 RAW 파일을 센서 출력 그대로 기록한 데이터라는 설명은, 아주 틀리지는 않지만 정확한 설명도 아니다. 명칭과 비유가 개념 이해를 방해하는 사례다.

RE: pnw.zone/@waprivacy/1160081886

I testified live on HB 2599, and sent in extensive written testimony -- thanks @Wolven @histoftechMar Hicks @emilymbenderProf. Emily M. Bender(she/her) and @anthropunkAnthropunk (Dr. SA Applin) for all the feedback on that!

privacy.thenexus.today/hb-2599 is my testimony, and here's the Blacksky thread with the very very helpful discussion blacksky.community/profile/did Decentralized social networks FTW!

Some suggestions for fighting bigotry on the Fediverse:

- Challenge and report bigotry even if you're not the target, don't leave it to victims
- Listen to victims, don't question their honesty or demand a solution from them
- Don't remain neutral, take a stand
- If you're an admin, defederate servers that knowingly tolerate bigotry
- If you're comfortable using Microsoft Github, give thumbs up for reply controls (github.com/mastodon/mastodon/i) & keyword flagging (github.com/mastodon/mastodon/i) on Mastodon
