A bunch of professors (who mostly don't really have strong credentials in the field) argue that "AI" is already as intelligent as humans (archive.ph/2026.02.03-055607/h) .

The paper is a hot mess and it's weird how that passed any review but I really wonder why that kind of shit comes out now? Is that an attempt to keep the bubble going by injecting more hopium while the economic facts are coming for it with a shredder?

"The number of American households with assets of one million U.S. dollars or more has been steadily increasing in the over the last decade. About 6.98 million individuals in North America had financial assets worth at least one million U.S. dollars in 2020, which was an increase of 2.67 million in comparison to 2008. While the millionaire population has been growing throughout the economic recovery, the strongest growth has been at the very top of the wealth ladder.

In the first quarter of 2021, the top one percent in the U.S. owned 53.5 percent of all stocks and mutual funds, while the bottom 90 percent owned 11.4 percent. This value may not mean much to the average person until you see just how much value the high net-worth population has. In combination with individuals across the continent, the total value of the high net-worth individuals in North America came to 24.32 trillion U.S. dollars in 2020.

In 2020, a total of 110,850 individuals with net assets of at least 50 million U.S. dollars were residing in the United States. That is about 54 percent of the total number of ultra-high net worth individuals (UHNW) worldwide. Other aspects of the wealthy population are disproportionate as well. In 2019, about 56 percent of UHNW individuals in the United States were male."

@3psboydMatt Boyd *thinks* silencers don't actually silence the sound of the bullet, what they do is the silence the sound of escaping gases by diverting them in a way that slows them down and gives them additional exit points. for this reason, when firing a gun in space, a silencer is actually probably desirable, not because it silences sound but because it could potentially damp recoil by preventing the escaping gases from imparting momentum on you (by releasing gas 360 degrees it cancels itself out)

Being DevRel occasionally gives you glimpses into how people treat service staff. A guy today got mad because I didn't reply to him for _two hours_. These hours were during my evening. He cited that I was replying to other people, so he's entitled to my attention right?

These same people will weaponise therapy language to try and get what they want. I feel bad for people who can't simply block them.

Jialin Ding, expert in databases and systems, has joined the dept.

“To most people, databases are kind of opaque, because they work behind the scenes,” Ding said. While a typical user doesn’t interact with databases directly, they power nearly every application.

Ding’s research focuses on using machine learning techniques to tailor data storage and indexing to the unique needs of the user or the application, in order to optimize speed and efficiency.
