What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Hey, Fediverse friends.

If you have been DMed by a random angry person asking you for favours related to me or the W3C or the Social Web Foundation, please let me know by DM.

The same person is doing it to others in the Fediverse. I'd like to get it to stop.

I know that dealing with toxic behaviour is unpleasant but it's how we take care of each other.

Thanks.

ICE wants to buy data from online ads to spy on people.

They say they don’t need a warrant. Congress could say they do. Time to pass the Fourth Amendment is Not for Sale Act.

Ran a fun Palestine Open Maps mapathon yesterday with Yara Sa'di-Ibraheem. She's researching communications infrastructure in Palestine during the British colonial era, so we extracted the telecom infrastructure in the historical maps using the Tasking Manager, based on Yara's paper: doi.org/10.1016/j.polgeo.2024.

We got a lot of work done! The blue squares are the ones that have been worked on. There's a long way to go, but good progress.

A screenshot of a map of historic Palestine. It's overlayed with a grid of squares, most are white, some are blue. The map legend reads:

White square: available for mapping
Blue square: ready for validation
Yellow square: more mapping needed
Green square: Finished
Grey square: unavailable
Red: priority area
Lock icon: locked

Finally got around to watching the 92 minute Technology Connections video. Worth every second. The incendiary last 25 minutes, the anger of gentle man, brilliant beyond my wildest expectations. Nerd power at its finest.

Highly recommended.

For the millionth time, ridesharing means carpooling, not hiring an exploited gig worker through a tech bro "disruptor" app that mines your data and breaks every safety and labor law it can find to drive to where you are, pick you up, and then drive you to where you want to go.

US-made munitions have played a significant role in Israeli operations in Gaza. Bellingcat has collated scores of incidents where the remnants of US-made munitions have been found in the aftermath of Israeli strikes over two years of war in Gaza. This dataset, while only identifying a small fraction of the US weaponry that has been deployed by Israel during this period, provides new insight into a number of deadly strikes where significant civilian harm was recorded. bellingcat.com/news/2026/01/30

“…Campaigners have described the jury’s refusal to convict any of the six defendants of any charges as a “huge victory” and a “powerful affirmation of jury equity and brings to a humiliating end one of the most politically charged trials of this year thus far.”

In 2025, the home delivery program at efoodnet.org -- which I've been working with for years -- delivered 395,200 pounds of food to families and shut-ins across the county. This is just a small piece of the good they do.

If you've got a buck or two to spare and toss it their way, I'd be immensely grateful.

Being an example of kindness, care, and attitude for your neighbors is a primo form of resistance, and shows contrast with the heartless folks spreading hate and violence.

With being down so much lately, just a reminder that you can use "ollama launch claude" to run the same great claude code cli with the local or hosted model of your choice. ollama.com/blog/launch

The support three or more really good models like qwen3-coder next and kimi-2.5k which is a really good model too.

one thing the web should have evolved by now is a portable non-centralised way to verifiably assert "I am the owner of <email address>" because this is clearly necessary for loads of things and approximately nobody does a good job of implementing it

this might have been what mozilla persona and original openid were basically. unfortunately those got kicked aside in favour of, at best, outsourcing your password table
