Good vs Evil

"One of the heaviest misconceptions we grow up with and one that becomes a deep well of frustration in adulthood, is the idea that 'in the end, Good defeats Evil'. As you age and learn the inner workings of the world, you notice the impossibility of that statement. Evil is far more resourceful, for it is not limited by moral codes or 'red lines'. To Evil, everything is permissible; it holds nothing sacred and knows no conscience."

One of the heaviest misconceptions we grow up with and one that becomes a deep well of frustration in adulthood, is the idea that 'in the end, Good defeats Evil'. As you age and learn the inner workings of the world, you notice the impossibility of that statement. Evil is far more resourceful, for it is not limited by moral codes or 'red lines'. To Evil, everything is permissible; it holds nothing sacred and knows no conscience.

Good, however, is defined by the lines it cannot cross. There are deeds that cannot be committed without sacrificing the very qualities that make Good 'good'. Once those lines are blurred, little remains to differentiate the two. Thus, the arsenal of Evil is inherently richer.

'In the end, Good does not defeat Evil'. Yet, this does not mean Evil stands victorious. In the end, it is Evil that defeats Evil.

[...]

It is terribly painful to admit that, in this world, Good is not as 'powerful' as Evil in the way we typically measure strength. A significant part of me shall never accept this and will continue to fight against it with every fiber of my being. It seems a cruel joke that Good must win by the self-destruction of its enemy, while Evil wins by design. But if the only way to gain that 'power' is to become as ruthless as the Shadow, then the price is too high. I will continue to rage against this imbalance, even as I try to hold onto the mercy that infuriatingly is our only real hope.

@wuest @aeva okay let me be clearer here: I don't mean we need to make Python not turing-complete so it can't be weaponized, but it might be nice if the *community* developed a slightly more hostile attitude towards this usage. it's not like there aren't things that have *already* been done. PyPI scans for and rejects malicious packages so malware has a harder time using it as a distribution or C&C channel

@glyph @wuest @aeva I like that this is being discussed. I do think there is more that can be done, especially if it is known that malicious users are, just like every other programmer, choosing Python more and more often.

For example, in the urllib3 Discord we often get questions about how to evade bot detection (scalping, scraping, etc) and informally, we don't provide answers to those questions.

Hey, Fediverse friends.

If you have been DMed by a random angry person asking you for favours related to me or the W3C or the Social Web Foundation, please let me know by DM.

The same person is doing it to others in the Fediverse. I'd like to get it to stop.

I know that dealing with toxic behaviour is unpleasant but it's how we take care of each other.

Thanks.

ICE wants to buy data from online ads to spy on people.

They say they don’t need a warrant. Congress could say they do. Time to pass the Fourth Amendment is Not for Sale Act.

Ran a fun Palestine Open Maps mapathon yesterday with Yara Sa'di-Ibraheem. She's researching communications infrastructure in Palestine during the British colonial era, so we extracted the telecom infrastructure in the historical maps using the Tasking Manager, based on Yara's paper: doi.org/10.1016/j.polgeo.2024.

We got a lot of work done! The blue squares are the ones that have been worked on. There's a long way to go, but good progress.

A screenshot of a map of historic Palestine. It's overlayed with a grid of squares, most are white, some are blue. The map legend reads:

White square: available for mapping
Blue square: ready for validation
Yellow square: more mapping needed
Green square: Finished
Grey square: unavailable
Red: priority area
Lock icon: locked

Finally got around to watching the 92 minute Technology Connections video. Worth every second. The incendiary last 25 minutes, the anger of gentle man, brilliant beyond my wildest expectations. Nerd power at its finest.

Highly recommended.

For the millionth time, ridesharing means carpooling, not hiring an exploited gig worker through a tech bro "disruptor" app that mines your data and breaks every safety and labor law it can find to drive to where you are, pick you up, and then drive you to where you want to go.
