Usually when people ask what it is I do for work I usually say that I work in network administration and security policy or something that's similarly likely to have no one ever desiring to ask questions about it.

Today someone did actually start asking questions. Beautifully the look of regret sweeping across their face within mere moments has me satisfied they'll never ask about work again.

Nailed it.

I switched my phone somewhat recently — from an Android phone to a FLX1s Linux Phone.

I am an early adopter — so there are some rough areas, but —

I am largely happy with the phone.
Especially given that it is a privacy oriented phone, that is an open platform, built on open-source software, where I am in control of it.

One nice thing though — for the apps where there is no Linux alternative, you can run (some) Android apps on it.

@researchbuzzCalishat yeah. This morning it was about someone who thought he was going to be able to send geometry data to an LLM and get information about what parts were obstructed by other parts, and...

I don't know how people I've always experienced as pretty smart are thinking that these things can do these things.

Honestly, it feels like Snow Crash, except that the mind-virus is also spread by the enthusiasm of the infected.

“Novice workers who rely heavily on AI to complete unfamiliar tasks may compromise their own skill acquisition. We find that AI use impairs conceptual understanding, code reading, and debugging abilities, without delivering significant efficiency gains on average.”

“We found that using AI assistance led to a statistically significant decrease in mastery.”

"Our government seems to believe the American people are stupid when it comes to Jeffrey Epstein. Not naïve or confused — stupid, as if we can’t put together basic timelines, read plea agreements, or notice when a serial sex trafficker keeps skating through consequences that would flatten anyone else."

~ Julie Roginsky

"The list of those associated with pedophile and child sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein from the released files reads like a who’s who of the MAGA/oligarch class."

Rubin points to the ways in which the Trump regime is hurting children: measles outbreak as RFKJr rolls back vaccine recommendations; cuts to SNAP and Medicaid; destroying USAID; snatching and deporting children, using them as bait, etc...

/17

"Academics and pundits spend too much time quibbling over whether the Trump regime is 'authoritarian' or 'fascist.' What is not debatable: a regime that abuses, terrorizes, and neglects children — and engages in a cover-up of monstrous sex crimes against kids — is evil. Anyone who has participated in or enabled these unforgivable actions should be banished from public life."

"The narrative seems to be this: Nothing more to see there. Simply normalize evil and go on with your life. In the words of the President, 'It was all a hoax.'

But there is plenty to see in the newest batch of Epstein files, and it’s rotten to the core. None of us should 'just move on.' Silence is a form of passive complicity. For the sake of our own souls, we should refuse to just move on."

~ Marianne Williamson

Today we managed to pass a leaking old beaver dam that is now frozen to the ground.
Snowshoe-packed a trail further into the bush. Yodelled and the old chickadees found us (the families seem to have their territories). How did we know it was them?
They landed on us immediately 😂. And talked!
Happy to see they have survived another year.

A small bird with white cheeks and a black cap landed on a red wool mitten to inspect the seeds on offer.
Snow in the background.

given how much discourse "rust doesn't support targeting X old platform" generates, i'm a bit surprised there haven't been serious efforts to transpile rust to C. especially because either "crust" or "rustic" would both be perfect project names
