What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

the actual fix seems to be to press "reset lockfile" (which is buried deep) or to bump the cache bust ?v= to force a new version. but the behavior i'd really want is much closer to npm releases: old version persists until you bump it yourself. i can't serve past versions but you cache anyway?

The CIA just stopped publishing their World Factbook and took every page, including the archived copies of previous versions!

This sucks. It was public domain, so I recovered the 2020 edition (the last one published as a zip file) and shared it to GitHub simonwillison.net/2026/Feb/5/t

the problem right now is that whenever the underlying thing changes, anything that transitively relied on it via http import gets the scary lockfile "everything broken" integrity check error. this breaks things downstream but also is very hard for author to fix — things screen suggests don't work

MS teams는 정말 여러모로 쓰레기인데 여기 요새 copilot 메뉴가 따로 생김...근데 보니까 ChatGPT 5.2인데... 한글입력이 안됨... 복사 및 붙여넣기로 하는건 되긴하는데 즉 구현한쪽에서 테스트를 안한것임 ㅋㅋㅋ... 이걸 이렇게 쓰레기처럼 만들수 있구나 싶음 ㅋㅋㅋ OpenAI가 망테크 타는 회사 같아도 역설적으로 UI는 잘만든편... 마소에 비하면 너무 잘하는것;;

Since DuckDuckGo has decided to regionalize all my search results even when no region is selected (why?!? 😩),

Making my work impossible (I don't spend my day writing about Canada DuckDuckGo! 🙄),

I have started to use @MojeekMojeek Search Engine and I must say that it is a real joy. I find what I'm looking for much quicker, no patronizing regionalization based on IP, and no AI pollution. It feels like I found back the 2010s web and I'm here for it.

Thank you Mojeek 💚

This makes me embarrassed to admit, but I suspect that a big part of the reason that LLMs and AI make me so uncomfortable is that injecting a chat-like UI in the middle of a creative process triggers the social anxiety that I heretofore used solitary creative work to get a reprieve from.

Like, I love people and love working with them, but part of why I like programming is it lets me switch off my tense social brain part of the day. But when I "talk" to an AI, all of that tension comes back.

In the Company of Others An Introduction to Communication 5ed by J. Dan Rothwell, 2015

Communication competence is vital for attaining most goals in life. In order to help students apply theoretical lessons to their own skills,In the Company of Others uses an organizing "communication competence model" to provide students with direction and guidance as they explore and improve their own communication processes.

Marked by J. Dan Rothwell's signature wit, this new edition engages students more than ever with its lively mixture of examples (drawn from pop culture, sports, and today's headlines), anecdotes, and illustrations. Focusing on the contexts of interpersonal, small group, and public communication, this introductory text integrates coverage of gender and culture throughout, giving these areas special attention early on in Chapter 3. Further discussions include cultural differences in perception and non-verbal meanings, cross-cultural friendships and romantic relationships, and gender and cultural bias in the workplace. In addition, the text incorporates coverage of technology and its impact on communication throughout. Topics include virtual groups, technology's effect on dating relationships, and the use of PowerPoint in public speaking. The book also features distinctive coverage of power, treating it as a central variable within all communication.

A unique blend of research, scholarly insight, and humor, In the Company of Others, Third Edition, is ideal for introductory communication courses.

Recent developments in genetic engineering now raise the possibility of a future that will someday be free of the birth defects, disabilities, and diseases that mark our lives today. But in an age where such things are possible, what is natural and what is artificial? And when people can be created in the laboratory as easily as in the womb, what, then, does it truly mean to be human?

4/
Moving from the information and machine technologies of computers, the Internet, and telecommunications to the genetic technologies that are transforming biological science and art, High Tech/High Touch reveals the emerging power we have over our destinies--and the need for a moral compass to guide us. An ideal book to usher in a century in which these issues will become even more timely, High Tech/High Touch deftly explores the world we are creating and the world that is to come.

In a compelling tour of our technological immersion as we work and play and search for a spiritual path, Naisbitt tackles complex questions: Does technology free us from constraints of the physical world, or does it tie us down to our machines? Does it save us time in our day-to-day lives, or does it merely create a void we feel compelled to fill with even more tasks and responsibilities? What about advances in biotechnology?
