Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.
We've identified some of them in psychology:
- tie your identity more to actions that are flexible across domains instead of fixed categories ("I can solve x types of problems" instead of "I'm an x language developer")
- seek community; in fact try to provide it for others & taking prosocial actions for others can actually help us to see possibilities for ourselves
- likewise, self-compassion can be increased by showing more compassion to others and seeing yourself in the same boat, and self-compassion helps us get out of threat and into real action

We shape and reshape our expectations of this continually but when we feel the rules of our environment have changed in a big way, we can't always reach for the same things to bring safety. I feel this myself: "I can always fall back on doing basic data science" doesn't feel available to me anymore
But staying in a state of threat is (obviously) enormously depleting. Without negating the realness of what's going on, it is a short-term protection cycle and you need to cultivate the things that will bring you safety while grappling with this

And sure, it is hard for establishment figures like Jeffries and Schumer to propose the sort of sweeping personnel changes that are in fact a precondition of changing these agencies.
