What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

I recently saw someone leave fedi at least temporarily as a result of harassment, and one thing they highlighted was that most of us don't see the harassment they were getting because of how federation works and the fact that our instances block all the vile ones most of the harassment was coming from.

They were running their own single-user instance. 🙁

We really need better resources for single user instances to benefit from third-party moderation resources, but we also need to get the narrative out that running a single user instance is a horrible idea unless you want to be your own fulltime moderator or drowned in engagement from the worst parts of the net. Treating it as a viable option now really sours folks to the whole concept.

Just a reminder to anyone that's near the Raleigh North Carolina area on Feb 28th some of us are getting together downtown Raleigh for a meetup.

@eric@mastodon.eom.dev and I will be there. Hoping a few others can come and hang out. We don't have to stay where we are, but figured we could all just meet up there and meet folks that share our interests. 😊

Amelia and I got to visit the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Brussels--specifically the old masters collection--and it was fascinating. Didn't have nearly enough time to see everything, only a couple of rooms before closing time. They don't prepare you for how large these paintings are in real life.

Rescued From the Streets😔❤️.
This little angel was found on the streets too small, too thin, and far too gentle for the life she was trying to survive.
She was rescued with her tiny leg injured possibly it was from being hit, trapped, or simply the harsh reality of street life, no one knows.
She is now under our care and next step is taking her to the vet. Please follow for more 🙏🏻.

Even a local iHeartRadio station soundbyte was throwing shade at AI Music, bragging that all their music was made by Real Humans.

Like wow. When you're getting dunked on by iHeartRadio...

For those not in the US, iHeartRadio is a massive corporation that has gone through and bought up a massive amount of radio stations across the whole country, fired any of the local talent, and just pump out the same playlists and DJ sound bites in their genres all over the country. So there's basically no difference between the rock station in Chicago or the rock station in DC.

For THAT corp who has ripped out every bit of human soul to music and turned it into cookie cutter formula stomped out everywhere to dunk on you...

the hype has been growing for a while i can't wait until a relevant fedi software goes "we implemented C2S" and it turns out they just implemented a json-ld flavored mastodon api that's exactly as limited but has a @context field on every api response

"These pieces explain how Guaranteed Minimum Income (GMI) went from a fringe idea to nearly becoming law, seemed to disappear, and then came back at scale through modern experiments" and let me tell you, I had NO IDEA how much the US had actually experimented with these concepts. I guarantee (no pun intended) that you will be surprised at what you learn. I definitely was. rgmii.org/history-of-gmi/

9 is next weekend (Feb 13-15)! This time our main topic is identity in peer-to-peer systems. How can we prevent impersonation? What about large groups? What are defenses against physical attacks?

On Friday night we'll have a talk and discussion on these questions at @offline. Over the weekend we're at Cultivation Space to work through some of these questions (and hack on our other usual topics like mobile, GNOME UX, and more!)

Some days I wish j could just turn it off and not care. But the rot extends—predictably—deep into tech leaders.

And if only it was just their software leaking and spilling into Europe. That would be “easy” to remove. But it’s their mindset too, and their unhinged desire to see it all burn and return to tribalism while they laugh all the way to the bank.

Their hate of EU is now interfering with the laws of the continent we live on and threatening to break it up.

The same Thiel winking at the idea of Brexit, who also explains why democracy and freedom are incompatible in mainstream financial papers and journals.

In 2025, Big Tech—just ten major companies—spent €49 million lobbying Brussels. That’s more than pharma, finance, and automotive combined.

Google funds all sixteen major European think tanks shaping EU policy. Not *some* of them. All of them. Amazon and Meta fund most of the rest.

This is no longer “poor old me, I need a bit of help,” this is full regulatory capture. With a view to becoming even more embedded into businesses and governments, and getting whatever favorable legislation passed or diluted to suit them.
