Having been through the US immigration process (I got my first work visa more than 25 years ago and became a citizen in 2022), it's obvious to me that Americans have *no idea* how weird and tortuous their immigration system is:

A suburban house; on the law stand a couple, their backs to it, looking appreciatively upon it. On the lawn is a lawn-flag reading 'Chinga la migra' in ornate script, surrounded by butterflies and flowers. The flag is limned in red spokes.

RE: glammr.us/@spagotto/1160240758

As another commenter pointed out, this is likely a change made in response to scraping of metadata (see: OCLC lawsuit against Anna's Archive, etc). However I suspect it would be trivial for a scraper to create a WorldCat account and then proceed with harvesting metadata from the site. Maybe this change is just to establish the context that the metadata is not a free resource for anyone to access online?

Committing the cardinal sin of posting _about_ my website instead of posting _on_ it, but I added lightbox functionality the other day!! This was a super fun way to stretch my JS muscles a bit, and I got to make use of the backdrop-filter CSS property which is super fun :)

My website has been more of a vehicle for learning scripting than writing posts lately, but it's so nice to have the outlet and feel like I'm improving at code despite not having much of a Posting output.

Check it out if you like:

Gen-X meets Gen-Z at "The Pitt", S02E05:

Gen-Z1: What say you, Dr. Robby?

Gen-X: Great. MacGyver move. Go for it.

Gen-Z2: Does a Dr. MacGyver work here?

Gen-Z1: I don't know.

Do you have any questions about how to use Mastodon or the wider Fediverse? Feel free to ask in the replies, or DM me if you want to ask in private.

No question is stupid or silly, I'm especially trying to help new people 🙂

(If you prefer to look stuff up without asking, there is lots of help for new people on the website at fedi.tips )

What I'm listening to today: "moog mother-32 + Subharmonicon + DFAM Jam by Saya 'zonbi' Nishida"

This short downtempo piece is based around Moog's generative-rhythm-and-chords machine, the Subharmonicon. (Actually this piece uses the same desktop Moog gear as the distant-howling piece I posted Monday, though *that* one was so drowned in distortion and echo you weren't likely to distinguish any one element). I really like the groove on this one.

What I'm listening to today: "Mutable Instruments Rings triggered by drums"

This is a drum solo with a physical trigger on the bass drum so every time the bass drum hits it advances a sequence on a modular synthesizer. In other words the drummer controls the entire piece, the synth conforms its tempo to the drumming and when the drummer starts switching the rhythm up the music adjusts to it in a really natural way. Technically interesting, but also an incredible mood!

I’ve been asked on TV hits and interviews lately to explain why decentralized social media is better, especially re: Mastodon.

How would you explain the benefits of a platform like Mastodon and the fediverse to someone in just a few sentences? How would you make the argument that platforms like Mastodon allow for more free expression than big tech controlled apps?

Would love to hear people’s thoughts! Trying to make my arguments most effective

The Zine from 404media About ICE Surveillance Is Here!

404media.co/icezine/

"You are holding a zine about the surveillance tools used by ICE, and what we have learned so far about how you can resist this technology.

This zine was reported and written by 404 Media, a journalist-owned investigative website and now, we suppose, a print publication. Our status as a small outfit of reporters who own the means of production (a website), means that we have the freedom to report on the topics we believe are the most important. For the last year, that has been Donald Trumpʼs mass deportation
campaign, and the technology powering it."
