Had a lot of fun catching up with my old jazz piano teacher Jim Trompeter last night in a chance encounter as my kid was playing in the opening band for Jim's show. The last time I saw Trompeter, the kid (now a HS senior) had not yet been born. So, many minds blown.

Also, I'm sitting in the audience and I receive a text message from Jim while he's in the middle of playing a raging piano solo. Still, trying to figure that one out... I digress.

孰不知 還有更多細節 :sacabambaspis_face:

未だにAdobe Bridge+Adobe Camera Rawの:kaseki::blobcat_camera_standard_lens_50mm_square_body:

AI-, research

So I just had a chat with one of the current students of my alma mater. There’s now an “AI in research” mandatory course right now. And they use “AI” in their literature review process to summarize some of the papers they need.

And I’m, like, lost on words. The whole point of literature review is not getting a short summary. It’s about finding connections, getting meta info, and encountering serendipitous bits.

All my conscious life was about serendipity. I was always exploring something and then finding some elusive traces of another thing that was also interesting. But not the “AI summary” type of interesting. Tangential, side-note, weird. I mean, this is conspiracy theory of everything type of thing sometimes. But I want to see *connections* and I value finding them.

Using “AI” for summaries misses that most useful bit of research. And I’m extremely disappointed about that.

🆕 blog! “Reputation Scores for GitHub Accounts”

The folks at GitHub know that Open Source maintainers are drowning in a sea of low-effort contributions. Even before Microsoft forced the unwanted Copilot assistant on millions of repos, it was always a gamble whether a new contributor would be helpful or just some witless jerk. Now it feels a million times worse.

There are some…

RE: mastodon.social/@stroughtonsmi

All of my attempts at having LLMs create SwiftUI apps ended up in frustration, but I've been playing around with a UIKit app for a couple of days now and getting very interesting results 👀

I think the syntax of SwiftUI itself is particularly confusing for LLMs. I've seen many models mess up things such as opening and closing braces when writing complex SwiftUI code. They also tend to bake too much business logic in view code instead of modularizing things, which doesn't happen when doing UIKit.
