What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

We are starting with Follow intents, but plan to support many more.

Ever seen the Facebook Like button?

You will be able to do the same for any fediverse activity, in a privacy-friendly way.

Built and managed by the trusted team behind @PixelFed, @loops and @fedidb, the entire platform is open source, and can be self-hosted!

We're building a better federated future, together ❤️

@evan@cosocial.caEvan Prodromou it's worse than I thought then 😅
I think there probably should have been a distinction between who you can address in the discussions you start, compared to the discussions someone else starts. It's a privacy issue. Say for example that for some reason I don't want everyone to know I am online and posting, so I restrict the visibility of my posts. Then someone else can see one of my followers replying to me (since including the handle in the replies also practically reveals who you are replying to).

Say for example I am asking my friends on fedi what to do about someone who harasses me. And someone replies to my post with advice about harassment. The person who harasses me could very well understand what I'm talking about.

It is what it is, of course, just saying, I think this particular aspect is not optimal behaviour for social media.

I miss the decentralized world. We used to have individual WordPress powered blogs, with aggregators of our favorite content allowing us to filter. Now we have Medium, LinkedIn, and Facebook posts that get lost in a flood of algorithm-dominated posts. I've debated restarting a personal blog. But I don't know how I would get people to read it. Are RSS, Atom, and aggregators still a thing?

The magic of the @webintents is powered by fedidb.com and our rich CommunityDB dataset*.

Imagine pressing the Follow button and being shown a list of supported apps that take you directly to the profile, without having to even enter your server!

Or, being able to onboard folks onto the fedi by simply tapping on the Follow button and finding the best platform for them.

It's a big deal, and will solve many complaints regarding fediverse UI/UX.

@benpateBen Pate 🤘🏻 is the genius behind this ❤️

Not me starting a new side project while Pixelfed users feel left out, but this will benefit and be coming to Pixelfed too!

I'm in a unique position to leverage FediDB data with the Activity Intent FEP and implement support in Loops and Pixelfed.

It's pretty much done already too, just need to setup the CDN and redesign a few pages

"When you empower a couple, you allow them to build a family. When you empower families, you allow them to build a community. When you guarantee a fundamental minimum income, you’re providing a foundation for those connections between us to grow and thrive, and that is the incredible power and value of community that we will unlock. That is what we’re investing in. Each other." rgmii.org/blog/welcome-to-rgmi

Some say other protocols have bigger budgets and are better at marketing.

I say: the Fediverse - by the people, for the people - has passionate advocates who use their talents to promote it, often without any financial incentives. It comes from the heart.

Before FOSDEM I asked my friend @sturmsuchtChris 🦑 - a super talented photographer - if he'd consider bringing his professional camera to take photos of speakers in the Social Web devroom. He did... and so did I.

A mini (pictorial) thread 📸

a photo of Maho Pacheco - a man with dark hair, a beard and glasses - standing behind the stage at FOSDEM, looking at a computer screen, smiling and with his left arm stretched out

Imagine sharing a link to your fediverse account to someone not on the fediverse, hoping they follow you.

Now imagine instead that the link you share takes them to a beautiful yet simple landing page that carefully guides them to the ideal platform, geographically closest, and helps them through the onboarding process, recommends the best desktop/mobile client and then follows you from their new account.

Stop dreaming. I'm building this. Wanna help?

@panos well, ActivityPub lets anyone address anyone else on the Fediverse. You can even address collections of people, like my following list or someone else's contacts collection. The choices that are allowed in the Mastodon interface are a small subset of who you could actually address with ActivityPub.
