What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Some say other protocols have bigger budgets and are better at marketing.

I say: the Fediverse - by the people, for the people - has passionate advocates who use their talents to promote it, often without any financial incentives. It comes from the heart.

Before FOSDEM I asked my friend @sturmsuchtChris ๐Ÿฆ‘ - a super talented photographer - if he'd consider bringing his professional camera to take photos of speakers in the Social Web devroom. He did... and so did I.

A mini (pictorial) thread ๐Ÿ“ธ

Still too much despair about "useless Dems" and a "broken system." The critiques are well placed, but the posture is too often deflated/defeated.

Here's the next generation. Get behind them. Encourage and support them. It IS our country. Still. LFG.

@xankarnAlexander Karn
Please, please, I beg you, do not elevate Frey as the exemplar of some kind of new progressive Democrat.

His public statements during the ICE invasion have been โ€ขexcellentโ€ข, and Iโ€™m so grateful for that. But as a mayor, in terms of actual โ€ขactionโ€ข, heโ€™s been a bitterly disappointing centrist bucket of slush, a staunch defender of the โ€œI am not racist but I draw the line at losing street parkingโ€ sort of crowd. He blocked efforts to deeply change the Minneapolis Police after the murder of George Floyd, instead pushing hard for less accountability and more secrecy. Heโ€™s blocked all sort of progressive local initiatives, and has been awful โ€” โ€ขawfulโ€ข โ€” on homelessness, going on a bulldozing spree that makes me sick to my stomach.

He can be great at saying the right things in the spotlight, and Iโ€™d love to see him be somebodyโ€™s press secretary. But please donโ€™t elevate him as a leader.

I know that โ€œI no longer look at the codeโ€ is a real cult, which brings me to my second thought: the more opinionated the engineer, the more likely they are to produce something truly production-ready. The same applies to architectures. TCA is a good example.

An LLM doesnโ€™t generate โ€œcleanโ€ SwiftUI code, not because there arenโ€™t enough resources, but because no one, not even Apple, seems to have a clear definition of what that really looks like.

Much as you don't generally go auditing the bytecode or intermediate representation generated by your compiler, I think the idea of manually reviewing LLM-written code will fall by the wayside too. Like it or not, these agents are the new compilers, and prompting them is the new programming. Regardless of what happens with any AI bubble, this is just how things will be from now on; we've experienced a permanent, irreversible increase to the level of abstraction. We are all assembly programmers

It still has a long ways to go but is so much better than it was 1yr ago. It was almost unusable back then.

I am looking forward to when it predominantly has its own content rather than just exports from TikTok though.

(note: as with twitter posts on mastodon, I donโ€™t like posts from TikTok on Loops. I donโ€™t want to encourage people for continuing to use shit platforms)

I wrote about the most ambitious form of AI-assisted software development I've seen yet - Strong DM's "Software Factory" approach, where two of the guiding principles are "Code must not be written by humans" and "Code must not be reviewed by humans" simonwillison.net/2026/Feb/7/s

I'm building @webintents publicly, with the MIT license.

You will be able to self-host it, and please do!

I've already been accused of a "cash grab" despite the fact there is no monetary aspect involved, we don't collect or store any data, everything happens in your browser and not even a donation link lol.
