I would contend most moderation in the fedi is poor because it focuses on obvious hate and pretty much ignores the conditions that allows hate to thrive.

Blacksky’s moderation is effective because it follows a community model that takes cultural context into account that is able to recognize hate vectors and eliminate them before they take root.

The lack of diversity in the fedi combined with its general aversion to decent tooling has made this almost impossible.

We can’t even agree racism exists here even if one doesn’t explicitly see it despite the reality of people constantly leaving because of it.

In this context, the ugly truth is that it’s just easier to deal with corporate social media despite it’s many deficiencies.

I recently saw someone leave fedi at least temporarily as a result of harassment, and one thing they highlighted was that most of us don't see the harassment they were getting because of how federation works and the fact that our instances block all the vile ones most of the harassment was coming from. They were running their own single-user instance. 🙁 We really need better resources for single user instances to benefit from third-party moderation resources, but we also need to get the narrative out that running a single user instance is a horrible idea unless you want to be your own fulltime moderator or drowned in engagement from the worst parts of the net. Treating it as a viable option now really sours folks to the whole concept.

Hey fellow admins, here's something you can do to make the fediverse massively better for anyone who's a woman and/or Black: ban "reply guys", mansplainers, and sea lions (https://wondermark.com/c/1062/) on your server. You know what I mean. Make a rule against it. Encourage other people to report it. Go into the comments of a popular post and proactively block or ban the people engaging in this behaviour. If a particular server is known to be bad for this because the admins tolerate this behaviour from their users, preemptively mute or block it server-wide. Consider public shaming. Just because it's not outright harassment or slurs doesn't make it okay. It still actively drives people away. If this is an undue burden for you or your moderators, your server is too big. Stop accepting new users and add more moderators. #FediAdmin #FediBlock
