What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

x.com/i/status/202017428688415

I had an interesting conversation on here recently that made me realize that maybe not everyone who uses Mastodon knows that you can use filters as a way to add content warning to other people's posts?

I'm looking for people who moved to a different country past the age of 45 and found a job there (so not "my company had a branch there and I was transferred" but "I would like to move there and need to find a way") to share their story with me.

I need some reassurance that it's not too late for me to do the thing I would like to do but haven't been able to so far 🫠

Bonus points if moving to this country involved having to learn a new language.

Boosting is greatly appreciated, thank you! 🙏

Edit: Oh wow, I've already gotten so many replies! Thank you all so very much, I'll respond to every single one asap 🥰

Also: I'm not looking for jobs atm, this post was more about "damn did I wait too long and will moving to another country even still be an option for me or am I too old" and wanting to hear some encouraging stories 😅

What I notice over and over again: I would not like to live in a part of Germany, where the next other country is maybe hundreds of kilometers away.

I need the proximity to the Netherlands and Belgium especially. There's sort of a cultural diffusion, bringing their culture, habits, food and attitude to this part of the country, making it less … German.

Thank you, Belgian and Dutch people :ablobcatheartsqueeze:

今の状況見るに『この世界の片隅に』とかに対する「声高に反戦を訴えない」的な”称賛”の言葉は決して「声高に反戦を訴えない……のに反戦のメッセージが静かに力強く伝わった」ではなく「声高に反戦を訴えない……ので反戦ウゼェと考えてても感動できて特に考えも変えずに済んだ」だったってことだよな x.com/i/status/202015707735277

The tech job market is so bad I submitted my CV for a leadership position in an AI friendly company...

No chance in hell I get it, but I needed to practice the bullshit generator part of my brain that this kind of position implies... Sigh...

Sir Alfred persisted: I understand your reasoning entirely, Ma'am, but I'm afraid that ship has sailed. AI is here to stay. People bank on it. We must build an AI tool into our app.

Our Lady Joan Mastodon rose. She spoke in forced calm. My dear Sir Alfred, I thought I had myself clear. I said no. Please enjoy your mutton chop. Let us not talk any more.

She sat down again and stayed silent for the rest of the meal.

Later, over coffee, she relaxed a little. I saw her chat with Lady Kinneret, her trusted comrade from the pre-protocol days. "Ships are sailing, tools are staying, people are banking, oh my dear Kinny, when will our men stop mixing their metaphors? It tires me so." The banter went on late into the night.

One thing I love about being involved in my College is I get a direct line on what young people are thinking.

In my circle of 30-50-somethings, it's taken for granted that "AI" is changing everything. Some people express caution that we shouldn't even take any position on software engineering education because it will be out of date within a week.

Meanwhile, my students are telling me that in their cohort, everyone is tired of AI and wants to learn proper software engineering.

One lesson here is: do you remember how clueless your boss was about everything? Recognise when you are in the "boss" demographic, and that your breathless enthusiasm and concern may be equally misinformed.

openly platforms—and profits from—. And not just nudge-nudge-wink-wink types of Nazis, but literal black-swastika “NatSoc” Nazis. And they recommend Nazi writers.

If you are still on Substack either as a reader or publisher, please seriously consider leaving the platform. It’s a Nazi bar. You don’t want to give them your money or your attention. I hear ghost dot org is a great, Nazi-free alternative.
