I remember back in 2020 when I wrote emoji-picker-element, I was sure that using native emoji fonts was the way to go, and that I was skating toward where the puck was going. *Surely* we'd figure out all these font problems in no time, right?
And yet, things are actually worse now:
- Windows still won't show country flags
- Chromium still won't fix this for us https://issues.chromium.org/issues/40766658
- Safari still ties emoji to OS updates
- Firefox's bet on Twemoji went very south: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1796880
I'd like to say that this is something for standards to solve, but it's actually basically just browser bugs that the browsers themselves could fix but don't bother (likely because any web app that matters just ships their own bloated emojis-as-images anyway).
It's also unfortunately not the kind of thing you could fix with Web Plat Tests, because the Unicode Consortium mints new emojis every year, so the test is outdated as soon as you write it, and doesn't solve Safari version fragmentation.
I can't believe it's 2026 and I'm *still* dealing with detecting unsupported emojis in browsers, because of course browser emoji support is still all over the place: https://github.com/nolanlawson/emoji-picker-element/issues/514
We will colonize Mars before browsers figure out how to draw a smiley face.

주말동안 아이폰 락다운모드를 테스트해봤는데, 차이를 잘 느끼지 못해 괜찮다고 생각했으나 ......... 여러 자동화된 인간 확인 메커닉들이 작동하지 않아 나를 로봇으로 인식해 서비스를 사용하지 못하게 함. ........... 그래서 락다운모드를 끌 수밖에 없었음. 다음에 사용한다면 내가 인간인지 확인하는 페이지들을 예외처리 할 수 있을 것 같긴 한데 ...... 그럼 결국 내가 인간인지 확인하는 페이지로부터의 공격면을 키우게 되는 결과로 이어지니 락다운 모드의 역할을 축소하는 결과가 됨. 불편하기만하고 정작 공격면을 축소하는데는 실패하는 식으로.

동료들과 점심 식사할 곳을 찾다가 괜찮은 피자집이 있다고 해서 가게 되었습니다. 직접 가서 먹는 피자와 배달 피자는 아무래도 느낌이 꽤 다르죠. 마침 네 명이서 가서, 라지 사이즈를 한 종류씩 골라서 하프 앤 하프로 두 판을 먹으면 딱 맞는 정도였습니다.
타코 피자는 사진에 보이는 나초 칩과 사워크림 소스를 포함해 타코 재료를 올리고 구운 듯한 피자인데, 고수가 듬뿍 올라가 고수를 좋아하는 사람에게는 향을 만끽하며 즐길 수 있는 메뉴였습니다. 이 가게의 시그니처 중 하나라는 것 같네요.
미트볼 슈프림은 제가 고른 메뉴인데, 비교적 무난한 구성입니다. 미트볼이 올라가 슈퍼슈프림보다는 좀 더 고기 비중이 높지요. 좋았습니다.
페퍼로니는 항상 좋지요. 단순하고 만족스럽습니다.
맥앤치즈는 사실 제가 피자에서 그렇게 좋아하는 재료는 아닙니다. 피자 재료로 탄수화물성 재료를 올려먹는 게 뭔가 탐탁지 않다고 할까요. 맛이 없냐 하면 그건 아니지만… 네 조각째는 조금 배가 불러져서 만족도가 떨어진 것도 포함해서 먹는 게 그렇게 즐겁진 않았지만, 뭐 아무튼 맛은 있었습니다.
여러 명이 파티를 만들어서 함께 먹으면 메뉴 하나당 먹는 양은 줄지만 메뉴 종류가 다양해져서 만족도가 높아지는 식사들이 있는데, 예를 들면 중식 요리라거나 인도식 커리 같은 것들이 있지요. 여기 피자는 딱 네 명이서 먹으면 괜찮은 구성 같습니다. 다음에 다시 4인팟을 꾸릴 기회가 있으면 가보고 싶네요.

@mcc's suggestion, and write the preferences serialization/deserialization logic to make it easy to change that decision before shipping a beta or RC build.

I should write a shell script that dumps out the default values of all XDG_*_HOME settings/environment variables/etc, so I can stop looking them up every time. It would be nice if the XDG programs provided something for this already, but ehh whatever.
