What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

RE: mastodon.social/@verge/1160410

Let's imagine I have like 2 or 3 reasons to be using discord today, and I'm trying to move them to something else in the next few weeks because I don't intend to give discord my ID.

The other comparable monolithic option appears to be Zulip, which is fine, as far as it goes. But are there good federated options? People are going to have to migrate to another platform, meaning they will have to bootstrap their identity and social connections all over again. It would be great if this was the last time they had to do that

(I'm aware of matrix, matrix is a bad option. I want good options)

I wish Matrix/Element had the kind of account portability Mastodon hasโ€” "social graph portability", let me change addresses while moving my room memberships/spaces on other people's friend lists.

I have never taken advantage of this feature on Mastodon, since on Mastodon I would want to take my post history with me, which you can't. But Matrix doesn't have the same notion of "post history", and also it constantly deletes your old chat histories claiming key errors so who cares

People are always gonna read this kind of thing as "shrill" or whatever so please picture me saying this in a super bored, calm, chill voice which is accurate. There's always a contraction around who gets to speak first and loudest when things are about The Future

I was hoping it wouldn't hit my repos, but the trickle is turning into a wave of AI-generated PRs that... all they do is suck up what little time I have available for PR review trying to see if there's anything of value in the AI-generated code. There usually isn't.

A Politico story out today describes how Oura wearable rings are winning over Washington, but makes no real mention of their privacy or security risks.

But... in my piece about Oura rings from last year, I explain how Oura puts user data at risk from goverment agencies (like ICE), and hackers.

โ€ข Oura data isn't end-to-end encrypted
โ€ข Sensitive health data can be accessed by Oura staff
โ€ข Oura said it has received government demands for user data.

Two things:
1. We are creating a two-tiered internet that will see people willing to give up their IDs having one experience while those who canโ€™t, wonโ€™t, or donโ€™t have them missing out on those experiences or being outright excluded from whole areas of the web

2. Why you would be willing to give up your ID to web services that have such poor security in a time when identity is being weaponized by state actors is beyond me

Thereโ€™s a lesson here, perhaps, about the tangled relationship between what is โ€ขtypicalโ€ข and what is โ€ขcorrectโ€ข, and what it is that LLMs actually do:

When medical professionals ask medical questions in technical medical language, the answers they get are typically correct.

When non-professional ask medical questions in a perhaps medically ill-formed vernacular mode, the answers they get are typically wrong.

The LLM readily models both of these things. Despite having no notion of correctness in either case, correctness is more statistically typical in one than the other.

โ€œHowever, some users may not have to go through either form of age verification. Discord is also rolling out an age inference model that analyzes metadata like the types of games a user plays, their activity on Discord, and behavioral signals like signs of working hours or the amount of time they spend on Discord.โ€

Me and some friends have been trying to be ready for when the day comes. Installing our own chat software, our own forum software, our own video conferencing system, and so on. Itโ€™s all less polished than Discord but if youโ€™re trying to find a way out of Discord, I feel that this is a way that works. Go slowly, install and use one piece after another, and use a โ€œbridgeโ€ to connect the old world (Discord) with the new world (your own).

age-gating queer identities is the same thing as banning queer identities. people don't suddenly become queer as adults, and the clear implication is that they are some kind of perversion you are corrupted by rather than a thing you can truly be
