Green Party denounces ‘profound assault on Palestinian rights’ in the West Bank

Reacting to news of Israel expanding control over the West Bank, leader of the Parliamentary Green Party, Dr Ellie Chowns MP, said:

The reported decisions by Israel’s security cabinet to make it easier for settlers to buy land in the West Bank and to expand enforcement powers over Palestinians are a profound assault on Palestinian rights, further entrenching occupation and legitimising illegal settlement expansion.

These measures are built on the foundation of decades of dispossession, subjugation, and military control of Palestinians, and stand against the stark backdrop of the catastrophic genocide committed in Gaza, where swathes of the population remain deprived of vital aid, medical care, and adequate nutrition, and Palestinians in Gaza continue to be killed by Israeli forces despite a ceasefire being in place. These are not the actions of a state seeking peace; they are the latest extension of a long-upheld system that denies Palestinians the right to determine their own future.

When the Green Party welcomed the UK’s recognition of the state of Palestine last year as a necessary and long-overdue step, we also warned that recognition alone was not enough – it must be accompanied by meaningful action to uphold Palestinian rights. The UK must take those actions now – ban imports from illegal Israeli settlements in Palestine, halt all arms sales to and military cooperation with the Israeli Government, drive independent investigations into war crimes and support justice mechanisms for victims, and impose sanctions on those Israeli Government officials who are responsible, including Benjamin Netanyahu and other senior figures, given the flagrant disregard for international law displayed through the expansion of illegal settlements.

We knew this was coming, but now the clock is running. From Privacy International:

"Yesterday the Trump Administration announced a proposed change in policy for travellers to the U.S. It applies to the powers of data collection by the Customs and Border Police (CBP)."

"If the proposed changes are adopted after the 60-day consultation, then millions of travellers to the U.S. will be forced to use a U.S. government mobile phone app, submit their social media from the last five years and email addresses used in the last ten years, including of family members. They’re also proposing the collection of DNA."

PI linked to and summarized a Federal Register entry describing the proposed requirements:

-All visitors must submit ‘their social media from the last 5 years’

-ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) applications will include ‘high value data fields’, ‘when feasible’
‘telephone numbers used in the last five years’
-‘email addresses used in the last ten years’
-‘family number telephone numbers (sic) used in the last five years’
-biometrics – face, fingerprint, DNA, and iris
-business telephone numbers used in the last five years
-business email addresses used in the last ten years.

The Federal Register entry says comments are encouraged and
must be submitted (no later than February 9, 2026) to be assured of consideration.

I want to be part of a flat collective/network of folks / orgs working together to provide resilient e2ee data storage using free software.

Like a file backup / object storage federation of sorts.

I want it to be scalable, i.e. folks and orgs who have spare storage capacity can contribute this capacity to the collective, effectively increasing the collective's total storage capacity. The collective should gracefully handle nodes dropping off or quitting the collective, and re-joining.

The API should be well-known, preferably something like S3, so the collective/network easily integrates as a backend for existing software.

I think there should be some way to 'balance the books' so to speak, to avoid selfish behavior like a participant providing 3GiB of storage and using 3TiB.

The balancing can be in-software, e.g. each participant gets an identity which the software uses to identify how much the participant contributes and utilizes across all their nodes.

The balancing can also be out-of software, through a member system or similar.

Would be nice with a social aspect.

Is there already something like this?

What software would be good for building something like this?

@deuxfleurs would fit this use case?
If I understand correctly, Garage can scale to many nodes in many locations/zones, but 3-4 zones (one of which can be a hot spare) is recommended. If a garage cluster consists of 50 zones with 150 nodes total, will chunks be spread across zones in a way that isn't limited by low-capacity zones? Does the total storage capacity of the cluster depend on whichever location has the least capacity?

Another option I found earlier is @peergosPeergos protocol, but I'm fairly lacking in knowledge about the project. Being p2p, would that fit this use case better?

Again, nothing will piss you off about the US quite like learning by about Puerto Rican history. It’s a well of European and US racism.

And in perfect Colonialist racism, US people STILL weigh in on what Puerto Rico “should be” or “should have” without knowing anything about the country or history, or caring to learn. It’s like the perfect example of how shitty US Colonialism is.
