As part of our commitment to diversity, we are accepting applications for opportunity grants. Are you unsure if you should apply for a grant? If you are reading this application and considering it, then yes, you should apply! The deadline to apply for an opportunity grant is March 16, 2026 at 11:00am Central Daylight Time (America/Chicago). Decision notifications will be sent out by July 1, 2026. You do not need to be a speaker or a first-time attendee to apply. We aim to provide funds to a diverse group of attendees based on their need, so it's likely that you will not get the full grant you have requested. Your application will be reviewed by the DjangoCon US Opportunity Grants Committee.

The @nlnet GenAI policy is the only one I've come across so far actually making a clear statement on the incompatibility of LLM outputs with open source: nlnet.nl/foundation/policies/g

Have any of the big license organisations (thinking OSI, FSF, Creative Commons) said anything like this (either pro or anti)? Can LLM-derived code be released under the GPL if you don't know where it really came from?

Or would org funders (I'm thinking of Google, MS, etc here) disapprove of such statements?

Roman elites drank from leaded cups because it made water sweeter. Radiation was thought at one time to have healing properties, so people would add uranium to their drinking water. Glowing dishes are still a collectors item. After the discovery of x-rays, shoe stores started installing them and using them on kids feet to size shoes. Lead was added to gasoline to improve engine performance, and paint to make it whiter. We all know about asbestos and DDT.

We look back at all of this and think, "how could people have been so incompetent back then?" Some of these things caused irreparable harm in their generation, some continue to cause harm today almost 100 years later.

If you wonder that, look at the whole thing and you have your answer.
