What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

@fediforum I *just* missed the deadline to submit a proposal for;

fediforum.org/2026-03-growing-

Here's what I intended to present;

Growing the fediverse requires growing the infrastructure. Their either means scaling up, to "enterprise grade" mega-servers - as Titter did and Signal has - with all the attendant costs and risk, or scaling *out*, horizontally. Scaling out to the world means supporting the creation of millions more servers. How can we enable, encourage and support that?

Too late?

I’ve had mixed experience with AI. Sometimes my mind is blown by how impressive it is. Sometimes my mind is blown by how useLiss it is.

I have been using it more and more for my work.

What bums me out, I think, is that I don’t want to proofread for a living. I want to _create_ for a living. [1/2]

I wish that those surveys so often cited by InfoSec pundits that ask

Do you fully trust AI output?
Do you always verify AI output?

also asked

Do you fully trust your colleagues' output?
Do you always verify your colleagues' output?

Just to have comparative numbers, you know.

folk, I have a question that I wonder if anyone had a good solution for!

I have 6x smart lights in my kitchen, each of which has power monitoring... But I rarely (if ever) use them individually and in fact I use a helper to group them into a single 'Kitchen Lights' entity that I can turn on and off as a group.

I had a eureka moment earlier of making a helper for energy and power to sum their individual values into a 'group' reading, that I could use in the energy dashboard to see the usage in one block rather than individual lights... But adding these helpers to energy gave me an error about missing values (last read, measurement, some things like that).

Does anyone have a nice solution for a 'grouping' of power monitoring devices that would work for this? Kitchen is just an example here but would love to group up other rooms where I do this too.

Thanks for any thoughts!

Stop generating, start thinking! We do not need more AI code, we need more human thinking about the code we ship. Spicy autocomplete is fine but outsourcing our judgment is not. Especially since LMM are trained on bad code to start with. Do we really want to have them repeat our human mistakes?
