What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Follow me for hot takes on AI (that there are multiple kinds of things called AI, that things don't necessarily need to work this way, that it is good to try to understand what's happening but not to accept the way it's happening right now, that datacenters are bad, that whether these things are good partly depend on whether or not you retain agency and how can we do that, that in general the fundamental problem is the socioeconomic structure that leads to devaluing the wonderful parts of life in favor of power concentration)

I've been reading this "Iain M. Banks" guy for a while and I have come to the conclusion he's really very good at coming up with ideas and then writing down descriptions of them

People should be able to write software for Android, and distribute it outside Google's Play store, without having to:

* pay Google
* give government ID to Google
* agree to Google terms and conditions

People should be able to install the software they want on their phone, from sources other than Google's Play store, without having to jump through Google-imposed hoops.

e.g. via F-Droid.

We've got until September this year to stop Google squeezing the open Android ecosystem.

@evanEvan Prodromou @dansup The number of developers and communities who've been pushed out of the Fedi because of this elitist mentality should be alarming to any builder in this space. Are we ever going to learn to do better, or are we going to continue pushing more people away?

The vibes aren't good, Evan, and I really hope you're aware of that, because vibes make or break a community.

@quillmatiqAnuj Ahooja @dansup I don't have a lot of examples of this, honestly.

I can think of a few great ActivityPub implementers who dual-stack, like micro.blog and Friendica, but I don't know of ones that stopped supporting ActivityPub because someone said Bluesky was started by a billionaire.

I think it's *great* when servers and clients support AP, regardless of what other protocols or services they support.

Digger, sei doch einfach Still 🤡

Ich hab mit dieser ganzen Scheiße einfach so fundamental viele Probleme ich weiß garnicht wie weit vorne in der Argumentation ich anfangen soll "Nein" zu sagen....

Observations:

Today social media looks & feels like TV to me. Consume whatever each platform owners' algorithms serve.

's ecosystem seems focused on reach & broadcasting. 's ecosystem seems focused on interaction. Is this the diff between Vs ? Newschool vs Oldschool Internet?

Would be nice if these become interoperable. Technically solvable, but I wonder are the 'cultures(?)' interoperable as well? Thoughts?

Gruppe H

Jetzt geht's ums Kamel.

The website has a new banner on top to remind visitors that did not change course and will be locked-down in under 200 days.

If you care about the freedom to control your devices and care about the privacy of you data, please contact your representative and make your voice heard.

keepandroidopen.org/ (thanks @marcpruxMarc Prud'hommeaux) has the resources to guide you.

We know users will rarely visit the site so the Client(s) will get a banner soon too.

Thank you for your support!

I will say here again I am very much on team fediverse and the anarchist anticapitalist free culture side of networks. Bluesky has some "help" with dirty money vc bullshit. There are many things Bluesky (the company) is doing that is awful (like verifying ICE ffs and deleting Palestinian accounts) and those are things I have been continuously pointing out as well.

Before I drive myself mad and try to build something I'm incapable of…

Has anyone built an server for embedded devices?

Not a Raspberry Pi, but like one of those tiny ESP32 devices which can run MicroPython or similar.

I built a *full* AP server in around 64KB of PHP
gitlab.com/edent/activity-bot/

Now I'm wondering if a tiny sensor could be a fully-fledged ActivityPub node on the Fediverse.

I've just updated my instance to stable version 2.90 👍 🎉
You don't know Snac? But you should: https://codeberg.org/grunfink/snac2
A simple, minimalistic and well documented instance server written in C, no database needed, totally JavaScript-free, no cookies either, not much bullshit.
A lot of fixes, tweaks and changes in this version, quick and easy update, as usual.

Billionaire investor Vinod Khosla suggested as many as 125 million people should be exempt from paying income taxes in the coming decades as AI gets closer to eliminating a mass number of jobs, suggesting the government make up the lost revenue by relying on capital gains tax forbes.com/sites/maryroeloffs/

Bold to assume that ultra rich will pay capital gains. Lmao.

A large number of taxpayers are salaried & you are destroying those jobs with AI. I don't think these people have thought it through

@kevingranade @cwebberChristine Lemmer-Webber to put it another way, i think why LLMs work is 1) language is highly structured, 2) human (generally) are blessed or cursed with pattern recognition instincts that make it impossible for us to not see meaningful patterns in everything 3) these two qualities make it easy to generate noise from signal to produce that noise patterns that looks indistinguishable from signal despite still being just noise

@kevingranade @cwebberChristine Lemmer-Webber and, i think this disguised noise is hazardous to humans in the same way that it is hazardous to training sets. the skill degradation thing is really alarming and it seems to happen a lot faster than simple atrophy, and this is my theory for why. see also youtube.com/watch?v=2r6UJlXCiG0

I made the claim that the FBI declared the Black Panthers dangerous, not because they were Black nationalists or supremacists. They weren't.

They were dangerous because they preached racial *solidarity*.

But don't take my word for it!

Listen to Fred Hampton's own words.
