I'm a computational neuroscientist ( ) and science reformer based at Imperial College London.

I like to build things and organisations that make it easier to do better .

I made the Brian spiking neural network simulator (briansimulator.org) with @romainbrette and @mstimbergMarcel Stimberg.

I co-founded with @kordinglabKonrad Kording and a bunch of others, and the SNUFA community with @fzenkeFriedemann Zenke.

In my main research, I'm interested in how the brain uses spikes to carry out computations, and what advantages that might have. Increasingly, my work revolves around using methods from because that finally lets us build models that actually require intelligence, the unique property of the brain I'm interested in.

I also want to make science better. Neuromatch's mission is to democratise science, and with our new open initiative (nmop.io) I'm hoping we'll be able to dramatically change the murky world of academic publishing.

You might (ha!) also see some political commentary from me. I'm a left-wing .

Happy to discuss any of the above!

RE: mastodon.social/@mcc/116088026

To me it is good when people who make electronic music make a song with all acoustic instruments because it's like you've got these people who are used to thinking very precisely about the way things sound and then they wind up thinking very precisely about the way their acoustic instruments sound

4. "Window of opportunity". This is a more complex one, but it is compelling. Basically, there is a non-zero chance that Bluesky's leadership team changes in the next few years, or that their strategy changes. (This has happened with other social networks like Twitter when the advertising business model was adopted.) They may at some point try to claw back the value that's been generated with the current open protocol, open source model. Hopefully not, but you never know!

Can someone who actually knows finance answer a question about the spate of "all hard drives that will be manufactured in 2026 are already sold to AI datacenters" articles, and those of similar genres: obviously there's a lot of price pressure on computer hardware right now, but when these articles say that this future supply is all "sold out", is this a hard paid-for commitment or is it a bunch of LOI / funny-money transactions that could be unwound when the bubble pops?

state of decay 2 bug workarounds, very long

i don't know who needs to hear this but here are some useful bug workarounds for very annoying state of decay 2 from someone who has... wait, i have over 500 hours in game? holy shit.

  • bug: character stuck in "searching car boot" animation. there's a semi-rare bug that occurs when opening the car's boot where your character will begin the "searching for items" animation, but the inventory won't appear. the only way to escape this is to open the map (or community screen, or base screen, etc) with a direct hotkey -- the default "open menu" command won't work! if this happens and you don't have a direct hotkey for opening any of the menu screens, you have to quit the game. you can't even exit to menu! solution: on controller, the menu is bound to ⧉ view (the button that used to be select). you should instead bind this to "toggle map screen". pressing ⧉ will now get you out of this bugged state. on keyboard, press M. this is something you have to have done before the bug occurs, so do this before you even start playing!
  • bug: new survivor won't follow you. sometimes you get quests where people ask to join. you say yes, they agree to join, you get the "noise from survivors added" notification, and then the quest updates to tell you to bring the new survivor home. you get in the car, and they just... stand there. their AI gets stuck in "stay in this room" mode and they don't follow you. solution: return to your home base and switch to the new character from the character select screen. there'll be a loading screen, then they'll teleport home. alternatively, if you don't want to head back home, just exit to menu, and when you reload the save, they'll be home.
  • bug: can't enlist follower from character select screen. you'll try to enlist them, and you'll be told you have to be at your base to do that, even though you are. this happens because the game doesn't keep all survivors loaded in at once, and that particular survivor is currently despawned. solution: switch to that survivor. you'll get a loading screen and they'll spawn in, despawning someone else. then you can switch back and enlist them.
  • bug: can't talk to quest NPC. this seemingly happens because the game thinks there are zombies around even when there aren't. solution: drive several hundred metres away and drive back, causing the area to reload.
  • bug: can't enlist followers during some quests. some quests give you an NPC follower. when this happens, you can't enlist followers from the character select screen. solution: enlist followers by talking to them in person.
  • bug: can't enlist followers at all. sometimes the game thinks you have a follower when you don't. switching characters doesn't fix this. solution: exit to menu and reload.
  • bug: can't buy individual fuel cans. if someone's selling two fuel cans, you have to buy both at once. solution: buy both when you only have one free inventory slot. you'll only buy one.
  • bug: quest NPC stuck in "i don't wanna die" animation. pretty simple: sometimes they get stuck in the crouched over, hands-on-head, "about to die" state. solution: drive far enough away to unload the area. if they're a follower, they'll warp to you. otherwise, just drive back. thankfully, you can still talk to them in this state.

What I'm listening to today: "1920263 Meditative Ambient Guitar and Synth Soundscape Behringer Wasp Deluxe Microcosm", CJT

This dude seems to do basically daily jams on his pile of midrange synths and post them all to YouTube. I liked this one out of the pile where a wasp provides a quiet heartbeat and he improvises a guitar solo over it. 1980s dark cinematic feel, empty streets and echoes and vague menace in the form of a young Willem Dafoe, waiting for you somewhere

What I listened to today: "Zero", Lamb

Whatever "Trip-Hop" was. Was a tension between pulling ideas out of lounge-y jazz-y genres from the 30s-60s to jam them into electronica, vs pulling ideas out of electronica and jamming them into lounge-y jazz. Which was the real thing? The answer seems to come in tracks like these where the musicians just say screw it and make a song with no electronics. This track's pure voice and violin and the vibes are enormous, it's wonderful
