What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Why do we want to grow the open social web, and for whom? @benBen Werdmuller says the value is in protocols that allow people — all people around the world — to build and own communities that address their needs. "The only way to achieve that is to not just co-design with them but distribute equity. They must be full co-owners of the open social web," he writes.

Meta is reportedly planning to add a feature to its smart glasses that can recognize faces. This technology, called "Name Tag," would use the glasses' camera and AI to identify people. The company is thinking about launching it this year.

Maybe something to clarify with . There is a full moderation system like on any Fediverse instance. Moderators can ban accounts. But relays are dumb by design: your identity and data belong to you, not to the relay. A ban is like a relay going down, you don't lose everything. You can move to another relay and keep all your followers, following, and data. With a custom domain the transition is seamless, otherwise it works through standard migration.

I don't follow figure skating, so I had never heard of these two before last week. This was an amazing performance, but I was more interested in the personalities. Although she's tiny, I thought for sure she must be the older one, because she is calm and collected whether they succeed or fail, and he cries like a baby whether they succeed or fail. Turns out he's 33 and she's 24. After their win, he's crying and she's laughing, "He's been doing nothing but cry all day." 😂 apnews.com/article/milan-corti

Hello Mastodon!

I’m Avi Lewis and I’m running to be the next leader of the federal NDP. Very excited to be part of the Fediverse!

I’m running for NDP leader because it’s time for the NDP to return to its roots—fighting a system rigged for the rich that leaves the rest of us behind.

We can build a Canada based on care instead of greed, but only if we do it together. There are only 4 days left to join the NDP so you can vote in the leadership race, so get your membership before Jan 28th and let’s fight for a government that serves the many, not the money.

The fediverse is oxymoronic, it's both working perfectly and completely broken. It's chaotic chaos and JSON-LD. It's 404 not found and filling up your hard drive with media files. It's built on standard and protocols and made up on the spot. It has the institutional backing of governments and ngos while it's anti-state. It's anti fascist and the fascists are enjoying the tools we produce.

@b0rkJulia Evans Metafilter also has paid moderators (faq.metafilter.com/33/Who-is-i) and, while I haven’t read it in a while because gosh I need to spend less time on computer not more, my impression of MF is almost entirely positive. (Note that “the early years” of MF seem to be regarded as having been more of a hot mess so maybe don’t read super old threads there; I only started reading it in the last fiveish years.)

The Annotated African American Folktales by Henry Louis Gates, 2017

Collected for the first time, these nearly 150 African American folktales animate our past and reclaim a lost cultural legacy to redefine American literature.
Drawing from the great folklorists of the past while expanding African American lore with dozens of tales rarely seen before, The New Annotated African American Folktales revolutionizes the canon like no other volume.

Henry Louis Gates Jr. and Maria Tatar assemble a groundbreaking collection of folktales, myths, and legends that revitalize a vibrant African American past untainted by romantic antebellum sentiment or counterfeit nostalgia. Beginning with introductory essays and 20 seminal African tales as historical background, Gates and Tatar present nearly 150 African American stories, among them familiar Brer Rabbit classics, but also stories like "The Talking Skull" and "Witches Who Ride," out-of-print tales from the 1890s Southern Workman, and stories that finally incorporate Caribbean and Latin American folktales.
