What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Before I get any further, I just want to say that the Spritely Institute is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, your donations are tax-deductible in the US!

And we have a few different donor levels... some of them even let you get your name in video game credits! (More on that in a few!)

four different donor levels: $10/month, $20/month, $50/month, $100/month, each level with its own pixel art

I don't know about you, but there's a lot about the world today that worries me. I don't think building decentralized versions of Web 2.0 era social networks is going to get us there.

We need tech that's secure, that's robust.

We need tech that's *participatory*.

We need tech for you and me.

I laid out definitions of "decentralization" and "federation", and Bluesky meets neither, without major rearchitecting or moving the goalposts on those terms, which I cannot accept.

However, "credible exit" is a good goal for Bluesky. Bluesky created that term and it's a good and feasible goal.

Over the past year, we've been engaged in a series of conversations with a small group of researchers specializing in IP, AI policy, and data governance about what CC licensing means—and does—in African contexts today. Our newest blog post discusses the themes that have emerged from those conversations and asks a broader question: how must "open" evolve to remain just, relevant, and community centered?

Man weiß ja nie.

Vermute aber die Lobbyverbände beraten mit der EU-Kommission hinter verschlossenen Türen. Da hat unser Einer schlecht Karten.

Thank god Microsoft is shoving Copilot AI crap into everything. One gets the sense this isn't going to be an isolated occurrence. From Bleeping Computer:

"Microsoft says a Microsoft 365 Copilot bug has been causing the AI assistant to summarize confidential emails since late January, bypassing data loss prevention (DLP) policies that organizations rely on to protect sensitive information."

@reiver@reiver ⊼ (Charles) :batman:

do the different norms/culture persist after somebody has started interacting with lots of people on other servers?

I guess every platform so far develops a bit of a culture based on lots of things, but in wanting to be universal, I worry about cultures here keeping anyone away. but maybe the goal should be to have every culture (obviously technically impossible) and help people find theirs. but also not put up walls. IDK.

@fedinaut

I can give you a more concrete example — quote-boosts.

One of the first culture clashes I recall regarding it was when Black-Twitter tried to move the the Fediverse.

A lot of people who were part of Black-Twitter were used to quote-boosts. They had a culture war with a very, very, very small fraction of (less-than 0.002%) of the Fediverse.

(Most of Black-Twitter seemed to leave the Fediverse and form BlackSky.)

This account has a website full of tips and step-by-step guides about how to use Mastodon and the rest of the Fediverse:

➡️ fedi.tips <-------- Click here to open the website

The entire site is written in ordinary non-technical language, aimed at a general audience. There's a section at the top with quick links to the most essential stuff, and a complete list of guides below that.

it's kind of funny how many people, myself included, just never use the game's official terminology and instead refer to the icons it uses.

there's a skill in state of decay 2 called "craftsmanship". the icon is of a hammer. i refer to it as "the hammer". unfortunately none of my current survivors have the hammer so i need to find a hammer book

Laid off :/

I know:

- Unity C#
- Rust
- Python

I can learn:

- Anything

I am in Massachusetts. Remote work would be great too

I've 8 years of experience as an MIT software engineer specializing in research simulation platform projects. I would prefer: not creating the next big AI thing, not making weapons, never having to think about blockchain anything.

Anyone got anything?
