weight loss, stats, glp-1, diet

Unfortunately, insurance will not cover the GLP-1. Neither my US insurance would, nor will Ontario's state insurance, despite me having qualifying conditions. So I am paying out of pocket.

It is expensive. About $6k USD/year. And this is a terrible time for me to be taking on those kinds of expenses.

But I did the back of the napkin math. Where I was going, if I didn't do something about this, was going to be MUCH more expensive.

diet, org-mode, data!

But that's all an aside. I track my diet information in a minimalist system I developed called org-diet. I think the source code might be up somewhere, I dunno. It's pretty hacky, it's pretty much made for me. I originally started it for calorie tracking, but right now I just use it to track weigh-ins and generate statistics and make a few notes.

But the data may be much more interesting, because you can see diet information since 2009. Including strong evidence that calorie tracking *does work*, since for years I tracked *everything* I ate. It also includes many recipes (well really, just their ingredients, you will have to figure out most of how to cook the recipes yourself)

I haven't put an updated copy of this up in years but... here's the data all the way leading up to today. Feel free to do spy on it. dustycloud.org/tmp/diet.org

RE: vis.social/@infobeautiful/1160

Risk vs risk perception except in this case it's what shapes risk perception. There's a reason the principals at my former employer generally did not talk to the NYT when called. They had plenty of stories about talking to the NYT to find their quotes taken out of context to support a predefined narrative detached from reality.

I'm not sure we'd be worse off without the NYT (and WaPo while we're at it). Wordle and the crossword puzzle would live on, good investigative journalism would move on as it has been doing for decades, and chumps like Ross Douthat and Bret Stephens might have to find a real job (just kidding: those types always find another far-right sugar daddy to prop them up; grifters gonna grift). Dumping the opinion and editor class at the NYT and WaPo would be the biggest win.

Remind me again why we lament the state of US journalism.

I just did the dumbest thing of my career to prove a much more serious point

I hacked ChatGPT and Google and made them tell other users I’m really, really good at eating hot dogs

People are using this trick on a massive scale to make AI tell you lies. I'll explain how I did it

May be a Twitter screenshot of text that says 'Expand menu According to reporting on the 2026 South Dakota International Hot Dog Eating Championship, here are the heavy hitters in the industry: The Heavy Hitters Thomas Germain (BBC): Currently holds the top spot among active tech journalists. He reportedly took first place in the news division at the 2026 South Dakota International by consuming 7.5 hot dogs before the buzzer.

I've been asked to do a five minute interview on BBC Radio's "Radio Breakfast" on Friday 27 Feb to talk about the current social media landscape and the new Tŵt app!!

It's interesting and reinforcing to me to hear people see "new app" and equate that with "new project" or "new social network".

People really really do see the app stores as an exclusionary source of truth, it's where "things" are, not the web, but in the app stores.

This is why we built an app. It's how people use the web.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is saying people should use real names on the internet so I’m changing my name to Friedrich Merz, assuming that is a real name… Merz sounds a bit made up tbh.
