What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

The fedi is a party, not a conference

You can’t arrive here with a canned speech - it will just be awkward and that’s why people ignore you and your posts

This is also a message for politicians who say they can’t build a “base” on the fedi. Interact with the people because they’re here.

@thisismissemEmelia @cheeaunChee Aun 🤔

Yes, I agree.

I think the important thing is that we get in a position where the ecosystem as a whole is able to make rational technology decisions that make the most sense and which fulfill clear objectives. But in order to be able to do that we first have to have a clear picture of where we are today, what we have established, where pain points are, and where we want to be tomorrow. Then work strategically along a shared (technnology) vision on ecosystem level, top-down. While individual developers drive experiment and introduce technology innnovations to be incorporated, bottom up.

Who dares imagine the fediverse of 5 years in the future. Or 10. Or ...

Who dares to ?

@smallcircles@social.coop I think something that is going to be really interesting to explore is that with ActivityPub C2S, it may make sense for there to be aggregator services, which fulfil a role much like "relays" in AT Protocol — essentially a big fat pipe for applications to aggregate data from all their accounts from many individual data servers.

There may even be a need to have a way to have an application when writing an activity to the data server, to be able to say "also deliver this to the relay as a bcc/bto" (a relay could just be an inbox/outbox setup).

RE: social.vmbrasseur.com/@vmbrass

Mozilla wants your input. Here's mine:

Mozilla should be doing two things and two things only:

1: Building THE reference implementation web browser, and
2: Being a jugular-snapping attack dog on standards committees.
3: There is no 3.

Mozilla should have NOTHING to do with AI. Nobody wants it. Stop forcing AI into every corner of every project because your VC-brained management have completely lost the plot.

I'm not using any LLM or "AI" for anything that I write or draw. Never had, and never will.

I'm making this choice because:

• This technology was built by unethically stealing the hard work of millions without any consent or compensation.

• This technology has and is still constantly scraping data, including personal data, from people without their knowledge or consent, in complete disregard of the privacy laws we have to protect us.

• This technology unnecessarily uses vast amounts of energy in a world where using more energy sadly usually means more pollution.

• This technology is working on devaluating labor in order to enrich even more the already rich, aggravating poverty everywhere.

• This technology is misleadingly being sold as a solution to problems it cannot solve.

• This technology is supercharging disinformation and manipulation online, centralizing an incredible power of influence in the hands of a few controlling billionaires.

• This technology is increasingly being used by authoritarian governments in order to surveil and control the people.

• This technology atrophies our creativity and capability to think, as well as harming our social relationships.

• This technology makes my writing voice feel flat and boring. I'd rather learn to live with my human tipos.

• This technology...

TIL: if you have a laptop with multiple gpus, and its set in eco mode, the steam video exporter wont let you export to h.265/hevc because it exclusively uses the high end gpu for that. ghelper on the asus rog laptops is great, but if you have it set to eco mode, the nvidia gpu is 'just off', and even the nvidia installer will complain there is no gpu present. seems like none of these apps talk to eachother and it seems to make for a kinda dumb ux.

@smallcircles@social.coop I say unseating, as in, this sort of significant shift in architecture would like be appealing to people who want to use multiple social apps. The cracks would immediately be visible to everyone with the current social app vertical architecture of the fediverse.

Sure, it'd be more microblogging, which is good for Mastodon, but people on Mastodon wanting to use other apps would feel annoyed and want to migrate to gain access to more applications in the ecosystem — where as right now the choice is to migrate from one vertical platform to another vertical platform, which isn't really beneficial to most people.

I think @cheeaun@mastodon.social will likely be the person to build the first "killer" C2S app.

Wrote something a bit personal today.

18 years in healthcare admin at Duke → coding bootcamp → Django developer → Core Contributor → DjangoCon Communications Chair.

The Django community was a huge part of how that journey worked. Felt worth saying out loud.

I've seen an ongoing debate between "Note" versus "Article" in ActivityPub / ActivityStreams.

When is something a "Note"‽
When is something an "Article"‽

Personally — I would probably have made the distinction this way.

An "Article" has a title.
A "Note" doesn't have a title.

(In ActivityPub / ActivityStreams, a 'title' seems to tend to get represented in the "name" field.)
