It supports the idea of a social media ban for under-16s.

I also don't want to see children exposed to offensive, dehumanizing "content", but I am wondering why a ban is the cure. The examples the writer cites are all examples of simply unacceptable speech. If the social media platforms had effective moderation, this would not be a problem. If every instance of misogyny and other hate speech was taken down, and abusers got reliably suspended and banned, the experience of girls and minorities on these platforms would be infinitely better. The people doing the hate might be pushed to reconsider their behavior.

Instead we will take away internet freedom from young people and force identity verification on everyone, undermine VPNs and so on. Why? Because that will be easier and cheaper for the tech giants.

Don't ban girls from social media. Ban the abusers.

A slick new phishing-as-a-service offering demonstrates just how easily a username+password and a one-time token can be phished. Dubbed "Starkiller," the service uses cleverly disguised links to load the target brand's real website, and then acts as a relay between the victim and the legitimate site -- forwarding the victim's username, password and multi-factor authentication code to the legitimate site and returning its responses.

i think my toot from about 6 months ago auto deleted on this, but yes, the AI industry thing of bulk buying up hardware components is going to quickly inflate Mastodon server running costs, so be kind to your admins.

I've said this repeatedly too but it's going to massively increase business IT costs very soon, inflation is coming across the board, CIOs are going to have a budget crisis.

Also if you're a CIO and you think 'doesn't impact us, we're locked in with Azure/AWS/GCP/whatever', I've got a used car I'd like to sell you with 2 wheels.

The very orgs causing the crisis will monetise it, it's kinda the point. Your Microsoft 365 E5 license renewal is also going to be a big problem, just a spoiler, and they know you're locked in and aren't ever going to move platform too.

Businesses that use virtual private networks to secure their computer systems are concerned that they could be inadvertently caught by government plans to restrict their use to people under 16. The government’s announcement to limit the use of VPNs by under 16s is part of a wider proposal to limit the use of social media by school-age children unveiled by the UK prime minister on Monday. However it is unclear how the proposals will impact businesses, including small companies, that rely on VPNs to secure their computers and to communicate securely. TechUK, which represents over 1000 tech companies, told Computer Weekly that the proposals didn’t appear to have been fully worked out yet and that it was hoping that more details would emerge in a government consultation due to be published next month. James Baker, a programme manager and campaigner at the Open Rights Group, said that Cybersecurity authorities including the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre, advocate the use of VPNs to enhance online safety.
