What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

i think my toot from about 6 months ago auto deleted on this, but yes, the AI industry thing of bulk buying up hardware components is going to quickly inflate Mastodon server running costs, so be kind to your admins.

I've said this repeatedly too but it's going to massively increase business IT costs very soon, inflation is coming across the board, CIOs are going to have a budget crisis.

There are a lot of threads about this depressing article:

theguardian.com/commentisfree/

It supports the idea of a social media ban for under-16s.

I also don't want to see children exposed to offensive, dehumanizing "content", but I am wondering why a ban is the cure. The examples the writer cites are all examples of simply unacceptable speech. If the social media platforms had effective moderation, this would not be a problem. If every instance of misogyny and other hate speech was taken down, and abusers got reliably suspended and banned, the experience of girls and minorities on these platforms would be infinitely better. The people doing the hate might be pushed to reconsider their behavior.

Instead we will take away internet freedom from young people and force identity verification on everyone, undermine VPNs and so on. Why? Because that will be easier and cheaper for the tech giants.

Don't ban girls from social media. Ban the abusers.

RE: toot.fedilab.app/@apps/1160650

The results are in: the community wants back. So we'll be bringing it back.

Source code will be reopened and the service restored from a clean slate as all data was deleted when we shut it down.

We've also heard the concerns and will work on making the opt-out process even more visible.

So features on Hacker News, having 245 comments rn. Many fedizens revile HN, for reasons I well understand.

It's still interesting to look into this thread and distill some product feedback for Loops' improvement.

news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4

HN is often blamed for having only techbro's with growth-hack mentality, with no moral compass or ethics.

Yet in the comments most concerns *are* about the of creating an federated TikTok, even without the addictive algorithm. Worried that short-form vids as snacks for the brain are already detrimental to people's mental health.

Some good feedback to ponder on..

Though I also observe a general misunderstanding how loops differs from TikTok, and the website doesn't explain that well enough. I'd make general public ("users") the prime audience served on the frontpage, who are hardly addressed atm. Then have a separate Creators header menu section. Then a Values section that also gives background to tech benefits.

Sadio Mane, The Liverpool Star from Senegal (earning approximately 10.2 million dollars annually),has given the world a lesson in modesty after some fans spotted him carrying a cracked Iphone. His response is legendary:
"Why would I want ten Ferraris, 20 diamond watches and two jet planes? What would that do for the world? I starved, I worked in the fields, I played barefoot, and I didn't go to school. Now I can help people. I prefer to build schools and give poor people food or clothing. I have built schools [and] a stadium; we provide clothes, shoes, and food for people in extreme poverty. In addition, I give 70 euros per month to all people from a very poor Senegalese region in order to contribute to their family economy. I do not need to display luxury cars, luxury homes, trips, and even planes. I prefer that my people receive a little of what life has given me," Mane said.

Incredible how just in a few years, the smartphone went from

"a device that's nice to have and allows you to contact people, access your calendar, play games and look up bus schedules on the go"

to

"a device you're absolutely required to own and have access to at all times because if you don't, you don't get a bank account, health insurance, public transit, or basically any online service required for enrollment in a school or an employment contract"

Seeing how google is apparently going the apple route and locking down their ecosystem more and more, the need for an alternative is becoming more and more apparent.

But actually, I don't need an open-source phone. I need a device that can run the apps for my bank, my health insurance, and my carsharing provider.

You know what would fix this problem altogether? If companies stopped developing android and ios apps and went back to making websites

It's no secret, I'm happy drinking instant coffee. (If you need to go block me, I understand.)
Café Listo is my new favorite. From El Salvador, it's got a nice roasty flavor with no burnt bitterness. The name is kind of a play on words, meaning either "Ready Coffee" or "Smart Coffee". Finally, I can buy it at the grocery store in town which makes it cheap and easy to get. Yum!

I'm holding a jar of instant coffee. It has a yellow lid and label which depicts a coffee cup surrounded by oversized coffee beans.

It's common to spin up a server in a test so that you can do full end-to-end requests of it. It's a very important sort of test, to make sure things work all together. And this is great, but you quickly run into a problem: port collisions!

So... how do we fix that? You read the title, so you know where we're going, but let's go there together.

E-bikes are amazing.

When I got mine, people asked me what it was like. I said that it was like riding a tandem bike with a friend who was really good at biking.

And it helped me get fit in a gentle, non-discouraging way. Now I can do 15-20mi without assistance (maybe less after this winter).
