What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

So... this is some random person give you reasonably well cited advice but: This made the rounds a few days ago.

blog.ncase.me/on-depression/

... and today this was published on pubmed:

pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/415060

The summary of both together seems to be that vitamin D and omega-3 acids are extremely important for the well-functioning your brain, more effective than antidepressants with effectively zero side effects for most people, and a year's supply of both is about $60.

So I'm trying it out.

Bluesky and Wide Decentralization

Contrary to current perceptions, Bluesky can not be widely decentralized because full independence on AT Protocol simply costs too much. This is not something that can be fixed. It is based on the inherent architecture of the protocol.

All ATProto components rely on some very expensive network resources, accordingly there will never be very many, making these resources points of centralization.

Most security reports could be a couple sentences and a small code snippet, and would be better for it. I hate that every report is written as if it were a blog post about their finding and how it's the greatest disaster of all time. Write as if you're having a dialog with a knowledgeable maintainer, wait for questions to elaborate if needed. LLMs have not made this better either.

he goes on later to say:

I get the distinct impression that the entire field was assuming that we were going to have to build a lot more into LLMs before they'd be capable of full consciousness

this is just arrogant. experiential consciousness requires the capability to self-reflect. yes, a 200k token context window is probably larger than the working memory of most humans, but that does not equate to human-level experiential consciousness.

LLMs do not and can not understand consequence, which is a fundamental requirement for experiential consciousness.

in other words, your pet dog or cat at home has more experiential consciousness than an LLM.

Check this out: clip.place/w/ajgJ5Hi69bbbxHCK3

I just published a video of the new "end to end encryption" protocol for ActivityPub in . The UX is rougher than I'd like, but you can see the client app is coming along nicely.

Today, it sends and receives messages using MLS, a widely used industry standard and successor to the Signal protocol.

By June 2026, it should be ready for you.

For more details on the project and my progress, see: emissary.dev/e2ee

Steve Klabnik also had an interview on lobste.rs. There's a lot in it! It's a cool read! alexalejandre.com/programming/

And then it gets to the AI part and he's just like "oh I don't write code anymore".

And notably Steve Klabnik has a lot to say about code, but it's *all in the past*.

Lots of brilliant people are becoming non-practitioners.

Feeling FOMO about AI? Well here's my advice!

Stay on top of what's happening. Which doesn't really require *using* the tools. Just see what people are doing.

Whether or not you do use it, stay a practitioner. And don't fall for the FOMO.

Your career won't end because you're not making the choice to use AI. (If your employer makes you use it, that's another thing.)

If you use AI, use it for "summarize and explore" tasks. DO NOT use it for *generate* tasks. That's a different thing.

If you want to differentiate yourself, *learning skills* is the differentiation space right now.

These things are easy to pick up. You can do it whenever. But keep learning.

If you see generated examples, don't paste or accept them. Type them in by hand! The hands on imperative: actually trying things congeals core ideas.

And if it doesn't help your career... well, your consolation prize is: you'll stay interesting.

just saw a take that was like "programming is fun and people management is not fun, so instead of automating programming with LLMs, why don't we automate people management???" and, sweet mother of god, people, don't make me tap the fucking sign

feels like a missed opportunity to show just the bsky lexicon names here. would've been cool to show embed of something third-party. i guess bluesky lexicons don't have this yet (maybe some do?) so idk what a good example would be

atproto homepage example just showing bsky lexicons
