"Kyle Fish, who leads model welfare research at Anthropic"

Journalism is hard. How can you write that sentence without wanting to shoot yourself in the head 4 or 7 times.

Yeah sure. Your bucket of statistics needs a spa day. Dipshits.

For years, a massive decentralized network of neighborhood councils known as Resistance Committees has existed in the lands ruled by the state of Sudan. Anarchists in Sudan have been active participants in these Resistance Committees, surviving against all odds through a brutal civil war, as armed factions compete for power.

Comrades at the Dugout Podcast, a Black anarchist media project based in the US, have created a fundraiser to get money directly to anarchists in Sudan. These Sudanese anarchists are building people’s power from below, through mutual aid initiatives, food distribution networks and medical clinics. This is an ongoing fundraiser intended for the long term support of anarchist organizing in Sudan. Donate individually, share within your networks or organize a fundraising event in your community.

Our comrades in Sudan are an inspiration to what anarchist organizational methods are capable of achieving as society around them breaks down and fails to meet the needs of the people. It’s imperative that we support their efforts from afar.

Git won't track empty directories (because at heart it only tracks files). Common advice is to add a '.gitkeep' file so the directory isn't empty and git will make the directory.

EVEN BETTER ADVICE: put a README in the directory explaining what the empty directory is for and what will eventually be there.

important safety/security concern if you have an accessible amazon wishlist and especially if you use it to receive things from internet people or other strangers: you can no longer disable sharing your address with third party sellers. These folks can and often do disclose it to the purchaser.

And, to be clear, anyone can be a third party seller on Amazon which means anyone can get your physical shipping address and full name with ease.

Despite what this email says, the Amazon list page says this functionality is already disabled thus you are already at risk ("This setting will no longer be supported starting February 25, 2026. After this date, third-party sellers will receive your shipping address to fulfill orders.")

This is bad. If you have any hope for privacy and do not use a PO Box, make sure to unshare your lists.

Snippet from an Amazon email saying they will dox you now if you use amazon wishlists. cool.

"You're receiving this notice because you have one or more Amazon Lists that are shared with others and have a delivery address set up. We're writing to inform you about an upcoming change to Amazon Lists. Starting March 25, 2026, we will remove the option to restrict purchases from third-party sellers for list items. When this change takes effect, gift purchasers will be able to purchase items sold by third-party sellers from your lists and your delivery address will be shared with the seller for fulfillment. This change will provide gift purchasers with access to a wider selection of items when shopping from your lists.

Important note: When gifts are purchased from your shared or public lists, Amazon needs to provide your shipping address to sellers and delivery partners to fulfill these orders. During the delivery process, your address may become visible to gift purchasers through delivery updates and tracking information. To help protect your privacy, we recommend using a PO Box or non-residential address for any list you share with public audiences."

What I'm listening to today: "#feedbackuary ...Crystal Cherry Blossom Caverns... [Pulsar-23] [Enner] [Blackhole]"

Slow 80s-style-industrial music based on a pile of idiosyncratic SOMA equipment and a musician playing a cracklebox like a violin. Run harsh buzzy noises into a big enough echo pedal and they take on this smooth fluid sound. The mood of a journey through a cursed, destroyed world, hunkering with your weapons in the back of a pickup truck, wind howling past

What I'm listening to today: "Up Up", Li Yilei

Li Yilei is a really interesting electronic artist from Shanghai, currently operating out of London; this is from their first release "Unabled Form". Slowly building ambient/cinematic object that is either menacing like an abandoned factory or comforting like a cold winter day, depending on your inclinations. Yilei excels at this sort of data sculpture, a space made of noises that presents a narrative as you move through it

You don't need to browse my timeline to look for past tips, they are all listed on my website at:

➡️ fedi.tips

The "Quick Start" section at the top of the front page of the website is especially suitable for new people. It has the guides to all the basics.

If you scroll down past the quick start, you'll see the full contents of the site divided up into themed sections.

The document-wide in-scrollbar thumbnail / minimap has been around for a while. Most people are familiar with it from RockScroll (2008) or Sublime Text (2012) or VSCode (2015).

github.com/coveragepy/coverage has a slick implementation (scroll_markers) contributed by Dmitry Shishov in 2016. Super useful when jumping between several places reviewing coverage misses, and super subtle!

@evanEvan Prodromou

I’m gonna scope-creep this by adding: an easy API for publishing and subscribing to multiple blocklists.

Like, why are we still trading CSV files when we could just publish this info over ActivityPub?

Let’s make a tool for building/managing blocklists as an AP actor for anyone to subscribe to.

Add in a “polyfill” to subscribe and load this data straight into big apps like Mastodon, and we have instant moderation as a service.

I can start on Monday.

@benpateBen Pate 🤘🏻 @evanEvan Prodromou let's talk about labels, I believe any nextgen ingestion should use the shared vocabulary to take in blocks by label about.iftas.org/library/shared

Maybe you want to block CSAM, but don't care about copyright infringement... (This way we could run one list instead of five and you choose the harms you want to block, as everything is labelled)
