Almost 40 orgs just signed an open letter telling Google to reverse Android Developer Verification, we're one of them.

Google has not backed down and seems to have no intention of keeping Android open. Check out our newest video covering what's going on and what we can do: youtu.be/5MZfGq5F1NU

The AI hype-cyclone is bad, but so is the anti-AI witch hunt. Commits co-authored by Claude do not mean that a project has "abandoned engineering as a serious endeavor"

Would we say that accepting contributions from new developers means we've "abandoned engineering as a serious endeavor"? No.

Claude can write wrong code. New contributors can write wrong code. What matters is what you do with that code after it's been written.

Rent covered. Power past due, phone due, storage due. 😭

The math is weird (positive) because budgets are hard in dire circumstances. I think I’ve held onto more donations longer than originally estimated.

Please help us keep a roof over our heads, and keep our cat with us. I’ve had him for nearly 20 years and he really needs me in this phase of his life.

Smart glasses freak me out. They should freak you out too, since being analyzed (and who knows what else they do) by them without consent is a huge breach of our privacy.

Here's a nice Android-app which tells if someone is stalking you with them. Then you can take a look around and give'em some harsh words 😁

My GitHub sponsors and ko-fi's donations have picked up this month! I don't have perks to give in turn for these. But thank you so much for them <3 These help fund: - pdsmoover.com - migrations/backups for accounts - selfhosted.social - A PDS - and helps fund my work on various atproto projects

Another day, another blog piece by Soatok spreading misleading FUD about an encrypted chat system that isn't Signal;

soatok.blog/2026/02/17/cryptog

Once again @matrixThe Matrix.org Foundation folks respond in detail to Soatak's FUD, far more politely than it really deserves;

matrix.org/blog/2026/02/analys

FYI I was going to say *willfully* spreading misleading FUD, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. Never attribute to malice what can explained just as well by ignorance (and/or heavy bias).

New to FreeBSD and not sure where to start? You’re not alone.

In this second video of the series, I'm walking through the FreeBSD Foundation's Getting Started page.

On this page, you’ll find:
— The official FreeBSD Handbook
— Installation guides for desktops and virtual machines
— Step-by-step written walkthroughs for common setup options
— Links to community spaces: forums, Discord, Reddit, and LinkedIn

i think it would be difficult to remove this without angering a lot of people but i’m also not sure. at the time there were no other anti-harassment tools and no ways to mute notifications or detach quotes / gate threads. personally i think it’s a confusing and cumulatively antisocial feature

free software folks: what design/org patterns are there for publishing community software to mainstream app stores these days?

eg, is there an umbrella org/institution that publishes free software apps to the app stores, on behalf of community projects?

could be an org like ASF.

I'm not asking about alternative app stores, or alternative mobile OS. i'm asking about Google Play Store and Apple App Store for mainstream users with un-modified/un-configured devices.

I'd argue that very few companies have any real appreciation for how many of their employees are already feeding API keys and other stuff into fairly new and questionable agentic AI tools or platforms. So many companies are like, oh we're taking a wait-and-see approach to adopting AI. Meanwhile, half their dev team is doing critical development work on shared servers that have no authentication or limited (no 2fa) auth.

@briankrebs I am also really curious how many people have aggressively violated various privacy laws by feeding stuff into various LLMs for "summary" and "analysis".

Frankly it should be a much larger compliance nightmare than it is. (Or, I suppose, it *is* a ginormous compliance nightmare and just right now everyone's thinking it isn't. Incorrectly)
