laserdisc capturing and deinterlacing and comb filtering is an art form. And a really fun one!
With apologies for the likely slow download speeds you will encounter trying to play this file. Blame comcast (my ISP). But I really wanted the quality of the capture to shine through and preserve some of the analogue video noise.
It was really fun figuring out chaining ffmpeg and vapoursynth and getting the inverse telecine and temporal comb filters working (all under debian BTW). Not to mention variable frame rate for the 30fps bits of computer generated imagery at the start and end of the disc. Let it preload or download it!

Some folks at tried to buy the makeshift hats one of our team members brought, so I arranged for this prototype of an official hat to be made. It's a fisherman beanie with our logo embroidered. I'm trying to gauge interest here. Is this something you'd buy? (Poll in follow-up post)

description of the video

@glyph There's an odd British game show called Golden Balls (really) where every round involves some kind of Prisoner's Dilemma like conundrum, the final round of which is *literally* the Prisoner's Dilemma. Two contestants share a prize pool, and decide whether to vote Split or Steal. If both vote Split, they each get half the pool. If one votes Steal and the other votes Split, the Steal-er gets everything. In the Steal/Steal case, neither gets anything.

Once again putting it out into the world that someday I would desperately like to work on a research vessel at sea. I'll take holiday time and do it as volunteer hours if a short-term opportunity presents itself.

  • I can write excellent code in Python without an internet connection
  • I can do basic electronics and soldering
  • I have college-level chem and biochem and PhD-level structural biology
  • many years ago I was on a sailing team, so I can tie knots and hike and stuff if relevant
  • also fine with manual labor and repetitive tasks. I just want to be on the water.

If there's a longer-term thing worth pursuing that I'd need specific qualifications for, I'd be interested to know about it so I can slowly accumulate said qualifications. (I'm not leaving my job-job in the next three or four years, but eventually I will be looking for a career-shaped thing again once this ends.)

Edit to clarify: for the foreseeable future, only willing to work with US-based institutions if I don't have to enter the US at any point.

These [Fortune 500] enterprise platforms require deterministic outputs, exact, repeatable, compliant, and AI is probabilistic, meaning its output can change every time the same question is asked.
That mismatch is the core reason AI cannot wholesale replace the systems of record that form the backbone of enterprise IT.
