What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Friendship ended with Digikam, now Darktable is my best friend.

(Digikam is great for managing a photo library, but the image editor is no good, and that makes it difficult to keep up with since I have to use an external editor. Darktable, on the other hand, is merely serviceable at managing photos but is an amazing image editor.)

I've always wanted to be able to filter my feeds by people I'm following or hashtags, instead of one huge noisy feed of both.

I've got enough working now I'd love for others to give it a shot, everything is stored in your browser, no tracking or servers collecting data.

if you have a few minutes I'd love others try it out or reshare

You can find it here: elefeed.app/

the "baritone" vocal type wasn't generally used until the 19th century. T-puberty vocal roles were specified as tenor or bass, and in the 18th century, someone we would today call a baritone might take both "tenor" and "bass" roles. this did seem like a head scratcher to me because there so obviously is a T-puberty voice deeper than a tenor while still being higher than a bass. but as I examine more 18th century vocal scores I think I am figuring out how they got by without "baritones",

Digital Independence Day expands to Colorado! Come to Boulder Library (Eldorado room) at 1:15PM on March 1st to learn about setting goals for your data privacy and digital sovereignty. Hosted by Coloradans for Digital Freedom. If planning to attend, please drop me a note on Masto or email the organizer so we have an approximate headcount.

Reading this, again, you get the sense that someone at Anthropic knows how the intel community misleads by using definitions of words that are different than everyone else believes. And the people at OpenAI simply don't know or don't care about that.

I've been saying for a while that we need something like FediCon in East Asia. A dedicated conference is still a stretch, but I've been thinking about a smaller step:

@COSCUP 2026 (Taipei, Aug 8–9) is accepting proposals for community tracks. It might be worth trying to open a Social Web track there—something in the spirit of the Social Web devroom at FOSDEM.

Nothing is decided yet, but if you're working on , the , or anything in the social web space and might be interested in speaking (or co-organizing), I'd love to hear from you.

I ditched my smartphone. But the camera on my flip phone is garbage. I got a Sony alpha NEX-5. Ancient but, by my standards, a ridiculously premium device that packs plenty of pixels. What it doesn't do is all the cool post processing. I'm used to the high contrast, over saturated images that Google photos turns out. I need to find some decent software to replicate (some of) that. What do you use for processing your photos? I need something fairly simple that runs on *nix.

"I was born in an Iranian prison. My parents were held in their jails. My uncles lie in their mass graves. Nothing you can tell me about the crimes of the Iranian regime that I haven’t lived in blood and bone. That doesn’t mean I want my people bombed, maimed, killed, their homes in ruins. If your vision of liberation comes only through the destruction of innocent lives, then it’s not freedom you’re after.”

"Friday afternoon, Anthropic learned that the Pentagon still wanted to use the company’s AI to analyze bulk data collected from Americans.

That could include information such as the questions you ask your favorite chatbot, your Google search history, your GPS-tracked movements, and your credit-card transactions, all of which could be cross-referenced with other details about your life."

Just had a sighted person tell me they often use clients and programs that were made for us, they don’t use screen readers, but they use clients like oh i don’t know a blind Mastodon client, or a text editor designed with screen readers in mind such as SonarPad, as an example, because they said, the interface is 1000 times cleaner, there’s a lot of keyboard shortcuts, and I never have to put up with animation nonsense. You know software development has vastly sank in quality when sighted folk are using blind clients.

every chat protocol made after IRC persistently keeps you in your chat rooms, even when you’re not connected to the server at the moment. this is generally considered to be a good thing

however, consider: this removes the peak comedy of someone saying “let me try this out real quick” and getting loudly kicked out of the room by their own OOM killer taking exception to an unchecked memory leak.

so, it;s impossible to say if its bad or not

How do people manage to self host, well anything, in the modern internet?

Networking stack is infinity growing and impossible to understand, all ISPs available to me use CGNATs and effectively break the two way street of the original internet, threat protection seems impossible unless you pay cloudflare....
