이게 보니까 Claude 4 이상 그리고 GPT 5 이상으로 올라오면서 기존 모델에 비해서 몇단계씩 업그레이드 되는것이 눈에 보임;; 한계가 여전히 많지만 이런게 된다고? 하는 순간을 계속해서 겪는데 이미 사회는 이전으로 되돌아갈수가 없음... 더럽고 치사하지만 쓸줄 모르면 빠르게 도태된다고 보시면 됨다;; 저도 약간 이걸 이렇게 적극적으로 써야하나 말아야하나 고민을 했는데 이미 모든 연구개발 스케쥴이 안쓰면 맞출수없을정도로 위에서 찍어누르고 있어서 답이 없음... 하하하....

I talked about David W. Hogg's  "Why do we do astrophysics?" in our seminar today. Thank to @aleksAleks Scholz who posted about it here first!

I can only encourage everyone working in or interested in science and/or fundamental research to read it, it has broad relevance and the crucial parts, to me, are not even the LLM ones, but the ones that define the basis on which LLM use in astro is discussed.

Why do we do astrophysics?

At time of writing, large language models (LLMs) are beginning to obtain the ability to design, execute, write up, and referee scientific projects on the data-science side of astrophysics. What implications does this have for our profession? In this white paper, I list - and argue for - a set of facts or "points of agreement" about what astrophysics is, or should be; these include considerations of novelty, people-centrism, trust, and (the lack of) clinical value. I then list and discuss every possible benefit that astrophysics can be seen as bringing to us, and to science, and to universities, and to the world; these include considerations of love, weaponry, and personal (and personnel) development. I conclude with a discussion of two possible (extreme and bad) policy recommendations related to the use of LLMs in astrophysics, dubbed "let-them-cook" and "ban-and-punish." I argue strongly against both of these; it is not going to be easy to develop or adopt good moderate policies.

누군가 LLM을 전쟁에 사용했고, 그 LLM이 사람 죽이는 명령을 내렸으며, 그걸 누군가 실행했다고 해서 "LLM은 원래 그런 의도로 만들어진거임"은 좀 과도하게 간거같은데. 식칼과 군도가 같은 칼이니까 "모두가 여기서 자유로울 수 없다"는 표현을 하진 않잖아. 우리 모두 내비게이션에서 잘 쓰고 있는 GPS조차도 원래는 전쟁에 사용하려고 만든거임. 나 역시 LLM이 만들어진 과정과 LLM이 활용되는 형태에는 분명히 문제가 있고 이 부분을 고쳐야 한다고 생각하지만, 해당 비판은 좀 핀트가 어긋난것 같음.

So, some 'residents' of Dubai are desperate to return to Dubai because:

they may not have been in Dubai long enough (if they stay away) to maintain tax residency & continue to benefit from its low/zero tax rates;

to stay in countries (like the UK) will expose them to that county's taxation if they stay too long.

It seems, given the choice between safety & paying more tax, some of the rich are keen to keep their tax low whatever the personal risk....

Something I love about the fedi is that you feel the rotation of the earth. I wake up at 5 am and my feed is filled with realtime chatter from my European mutuals, not filled with random algorithmic schlock from times and places unknown.

Cette écoute moins attentive pourrait même aller jusqu’à l’erreur médicale, comme le montrent les travaux – en cours – de Maud Gelly sur le genre de l’erreur médicale.

Using a free software stack, you could be an effective developer with a relatively low budget. A cheap or used laptop and an internet subscription.

LLM coding is changing that too. You either need a very powerful and expensive machine to run a local model, or (currently more likely) an LLM subscription. We are lead to believe you have to pay a monthly fee to be an effective developer.

The prospect of your output as a developer being tied to a proprietary service seems risky at best.
