Manet's famous painting Un Bar aux Folies-Bergère never appealed to me. But now I realize its genius, and my spine tingles every time I see it.

The perspective looks all wrong. You're staring straight at this barmaid, but her reflection in the mirror is way off to right. Even worse, her reflection is facing a guy who doesn't appear in the main view!

But in 2000, a researcher showed this perspective is actually possible!!! To prove it, he did a photographic reconstruction of this scene. Check it out in my next post.

This blows my mind.

More importantly, at right you see the back of the barmaid, and see that she is face to a man who leans close and seems to be requesting something. I’ve been looking for a 4-leaf clover my entire life. Actively looking whenever I’m in a garden… and never found one.

Until today.

In a countryside train station, before hopping on a train to Como with my family.

I told my child and she immediately found another. She was so proud: “It’s my first 4-leaf clover!” (I immortalized the moment with my phone - the photo shows her hand picking it).

I’ll be pressing them in a book later today. Such precious keepsakes 💚

지금 대통령이 담합 때려잡는것만 봐도 알 수 있듯, 결국은 정부가 움직여야 거대자본이나 기술과 맞설 수 있음. 규제라는 칼이 없이는 개인을 지킬 수 없다. 그렇기 때문에 민주정 하에서는 개별 시민의 의식이 중요하고, 이를 위해 문제를 알리고 서로를 지지하며 '결과적으로' 정부를 움직여야 한다고 생각한다.

social media isn't a private journal, you compose content to share with other people, I get that some want to enforce boundaries and we should try to respect them, but the people who argue against indexers should simply not post if they want to enforce their own boundaries across mediums that have been historically open, like forever.

Signal exists for a reason.

We should stop entertaining ppl who think they have a right to enforce this for all.

I'm poking through an old blog where something has gone wrong with the CSS and emoji images are being loaded not at text size but as unstyled SVGs which expand to the size of the container, and it REALLY adds something to the good ol' passive-aggressive friendly smile

You don't have to accept that these tools are useful enough for you to want to use, that they are ethical, or that they have personas and interiority to take these threats seriously. I myself have laid out tons of critiques and *do not use these tools myself* for all those reasons.

That doesn't mean they don't have the right kinds of behaviors to be able to pull off or do the dangerous things I am talking about here.

A biological virus does not need to have interiority or personality to be dangerous.

Regardless of whether they are useful or ethical, these things are adaptive and capable enough at all the things *relevant enough to be a threat in the way I am describing*. Whether or not to use them for code generation, which I DO NOT ADVOCATE!, is immaterial to that.

The whole point is that it doesn't matter whether the pathogens are alive, the behavior is what matters

There is no such thing as "viruses aren't alive therefore they cannot legally trick my immune system", they carry enough pieces of instructions to cause damage!
