llm pol

i have a feeling that everyone who is arguing about LLMs in the sense of stuff like productivity, quality of the output, performance or functionality of generated code, largely even licensing or whatnot is kinda missing the point

even if LLMs generated the best code in the world, i would not be using them

even if LLMs gave me the biggest ever productivity boost i would not be using them

even if the output was clean copyright-wise and fully original, i would still not be using them

i can't consciously support a worldwide slop machine that helps and finances the rise of fascism, that helps further oppression, that helps a bunch of billionaires control public opinion, that drives society-wide psychosis with far-reaching consequences, that attempts to strip all joy from activities people like while using that to make the rich even richer, and that's not even getting to environmental stuff or whatever

i'm getting left behind you say

well fuck your industry and fuck you

Sean makes a good point, so fine, here’s a proposal for Barasso:

A photo ID is both necessary •and• sufficient to vote. No voter rolls, no registration. You show up on the day of the election with a photo ID that shows an address in the district, you can vote — end of story. Because photo IDs are so great.

What do you think, Barasso? How about it? mastodon.social/@SeanCasten/11

In order to search for a string in some files, use 'grep' like this:

grep "string" filename1 [filename2 filename3 ...]

This will print out the lines in the files that contain the string. grep can
also do a lot more advanced searches - type 'man grep' for details.

🚨 OpenAI's head of Robotics resigned because the company is building lethal AI weapons with NO human input required.

> Read that again. Lethal. Autonomy. Without. Human. Authorization.

> The person who built the robots is saying she quit because there are no guardrails on who they kill.

This is the same company that won't let ChatGPT say a swear word.

They put safety filters on your prompts but none on their kill chain.

I resigned from OpenAI. I care deeply about the Robotics team and the work we built together. This wasn’t an easy call. AI has an important role in national security. But surveillance of Americans without judicial oversight and lethal autonomy without human authorization are lines that deserved more deliberation than they got. This was about principle, not people. I have deep respect for Sam and the team, and I’m proud of what we built together.

A German computer magazine wrote an article about how to configure Windows 11 to respect your privacy better, and in the next issue they printed a snarky remark that a lot of people sent them letters recommending to use Linux. :woozy_baa:

Because @Gizmodo’s Flipboard site won’t scroll for me (?!?), here’s the paragraph with the punch:

❝It’s worth noting that over the decades, Pixar has explored topics such as, but [not*] limited to: becoming a widower, suddenly becoming a single or adoptive parent, environmental collapse, existential dread, motherhood, and job burnout. The first Incredibles has a subplot where Elastigirl thinks Mr. Incredible is having an affair, Toy Story 3 has the toys accept death by furnace, and Elemental is about interracial relationships. The last two movies Docter directed were Soul, which is about a Black man finding joy in his life again, and Inside Out—maybe the most therapy-ass movie (and series) in the studio’s entire 40-year tenure—is about messy preteen emotions that lead to its main character running away from home.❞

* The word “not” is missing in the original, surely an editorial mistake?

This is nonsense. The idea that you need a photo ID to buy beer so it's just common sense that you need one to vote is premised on a world where (a) every liquor store has a list of all eligible drinkers that they check off when you buy a beer and...
