文科相「記録ない」「確認しない」 旧統一教会名称変更への働きかけ [旧統一教会問題]:朝日新聞
asahi.com/articles/ASV3B0GP6V3

If you play games on iOS, and you want to have that “old school” experience of just purchasing a game in exchange for a single payment and then playing that game without the game trying to suck more money out of you, I recommend Vivid Knight.

Look I am a big advocate for "the ActivityPub C2S protocol is actually pretty good and should be adopted"

But imagine if I put a client so I could post to fedi on my phone

man that would be a disaster I would never stop posting

there's a reason I never installed such a client I guess. I'd be unhinged

Reflecting on all the times in my career as a software engineer I have been told that, yes, things were a bit unfair to me as a woman, but that I was being a trailblazer, I was the one discovering and establishing the path that would enable others to follow.

But you go back to the 70s and you see the same number of women programmers, being fed that exact same line
And in the 80s
and the 90s
and so on to today. The "trailblazer" narrative is a lie told by managers to make themselves feel better

FreeBSD 14.4 goes official!

FreeBSD 14.4 is now globally available for the general public! This version of FreeBSD aims to bring many improvements to the operating system and to the kernel to enhance your user experience.

The ISO images can now be downloaded using the below button. It will take you to the file list that lets you select what kind of image you want to download, in terms of architecture, install source, and image type.

FreeBSD 14.4 brings security fixes and other fixes to essential and other system components to ensure that both stability and security are guaranteed. It also introduces new features, such as, but not limited to:

  • OpenSSH has been upgraded to version 10.0p2 and now uses the hybrid post-quantum algorithm mlkem768x25519-sha256 by default.
  • OpenZFS has been upgraded to version 2.2.9.
  • Significantly improved cloud-init compatibility in nuageinit.
  • Bhyve virtual machines can now share a filesystem with the host via the new p9fs(4).
  • Significant improvements in manual page tooling and content.

The below release notes can be found here.

Today @kopperkopper :colon_three: shared a post on the fediverse titled how to not regret c2s, and I found it genuinely interesting to read, even if I'm not sure its proposed architecture actually solves what it sets out to solve.

The author's frustration with naïve implementations is well-founded. Slapping an facade onto an existing Mastodon-like server and calling it C2S doesn't buy you much—you end up with the rigidity of a bespoke API without any of the interoperability C2S is supposed to offer. The “JSON-LD flavored Mastodon API” framing is apt.

The proposed solution is to split responsibility more aggressively: the C2S server should be nearly stateless and dumb, storing ActivityPub objects without interpreting them, while a separate “client” layer handles indexing, timelines, moderation, and exposes its own API to the frontend running on the user's device. It's a clean separation of concerns on paper.

But here's what bothers me. When you map this architecture onto familiar terms, it looks roughly like this:

  • C2S server ≈ a database (PostgreSQL, say)
  • “Client” ≈ an application server (Mastodon, Misskey)
  • “Frontend” ≈ the actual client app on your phone

That's not a new architecture. That's just the current architecture with the labels shifted. The interesting question is which interface gets standardized, and the author's answer is the one between the C2S server and the “client” layer—the bottom boundary.

The problem is that what people actually want from C2S is to connect any frontend to any server. The portability they're after lives at the top boundary, between the frontend and whatever is behind it. But the author explicitly argues against standardizing that layer: “we don't really need a standardized api,” they write, leaving each client free to expose whatever API it likes.

Which means frontends remain locked to specific clients, just as Mastodon apps are locked to the Mastodon API today. The interoperability promise of C2S—log in to any server with any app—isn't actually delivered. It's been pushed one layer down, out of reach of the end user.

There's real value in the post's thinking about data hosting vs. interpretation, and about the security implications of servers that understand too much. But as an answer to the question C2S is supposed to answer, I'm not convinced.

This is exactly what I say in the talk that I still need to record, and why I was working on that ActivityPDS concept last september.

Zen fascists will control you: ianbetteridge.com/zen-fascist-

In 1979, a punk band from San Francisco recorded a song about the Governor of California. It was a joke, mostly. Jerry Brown was a Democrat, a Buddhist, a man who dated Linda Ronstadt and discussed limits and simplicity at a moment when America was in no mood for either.
