What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

How does Loops Starter Kits prevent abuse?

You can only add accounts that support a new actor field, and if supported, approval with public attestation is required before they can be publicly included.

Basically, you have to get permission first, publicly.

Accounts from software that doesn't support the new actor field will not appear in search results when adding accounts.

There are 80+ new and updated files that power the new Starter Kits feature!

From exploration to curation, I've built a highly polished experience that is open, accessible and federated.

Admins will love the powerful management, that also includes audit logs.

Can't wait to ship this later this week!

My one Tony Hoare (RIP) story:

We got him to keynote our conference one year. We snapped him up afterwards along with a couple of other speakers for dinner, as we usually did, hoping to partake of his wisdom in a more private setting, but Joe Armstrong (also RIP) sat down next to him and started conversing excitedly, and none of the rest of us got a word in edgewise for the rest of the evening.

I realise this was probably more of a Joe Armstrong story.

Shitpost projects, where someone takes an objectively terrible idea and puts way too much effort into executing it well, don't hit the same when we're all drowning in slop.

Did they put any effort into it? Do they realize it was a terrible idea?

Impossible to tell.

Poe's law comes for us all.

Check out this new online storefront for Canadian independent booksellers!

booksellers.ca

The Quebec Cooperative of Independent Bookstores, who have been selling (mostly French-language, but also English) books online for 15 years through leslibraires.ca, have launched a new initiative for independent bookstores across Canada.

There are currently 150 booksellers participating, with 25 English-language stores having now added themselves to the ranks.

I'm tickled pink by this expansion. I always check Les Libraires first when I'm looking to buy a book, in English or French. I even check if I'm looking for something in Spanish, just on the off chance they might have it in stock.

Since the coop's members have historically been mostly French-language sellers, Les Libraires is hit or miss for English titles. So, I'm really looking forward to seeing how this new site develops.

Give them a visit and buy a book to support small, local businesses across the country!

If there's an independent bookshop in your area who might benefit from participating, let them know about the project, too!

The damage in the office following has been estimated at about €11,500 + VAT. The floors became soaked and continue to release both odor and crystals. The insurance companies are finding every possible excuse not to pay. The assessor from the first company wants to "come back to take another look" (even though he was the one who initially suggested I get a proper quote because the damage was clearly not trivial), and the assessor from the second company will be there tomorrow morning. So I'll have to go there and waste half a day: I can't work from there, I can't park near and I need to be there. And, of course, it will be raining (even if it's not been raining for more than one month).

All I know is that my office has been unusable for two months, and my patience, although extremely large given that I already have other things on my mind during this period, is starting to run out.

The end of the release cycle is really the peak. When a full cycle's worth of work and efforts are combined into a fresh tarball that is sent out into the cold harsh real world with the ideal outcome that everything just keeps on working exactly like before, ideally a little better.

The night before a release we believe this is the best we ever did. Every time we think this. Who knows what we will think tomorrow at this time.

Thanks for flying . It's an adventure and honor to pilot this.

Back in May 2019, we said goodbye to SVN and Bugzilla and migrated to Git and GitHub [1]. Since then, we accumulated 188 repositories. 🙀

We're now making a list to decide which ones we're moving to @Codeberg and which are going to be archived and left behind.

While we're doing that, we signed NLnet Labs up as a Codeberg e.V. member!
