I always bring up auto-captioning as a (non-LLM) technology that is probably a net-win for accessibility, but that still led to Youtube ending up with *WORSE* closed captioning, because as soon as they got machine transcription, they dropped community transcription options.
Adding machine transcription to Youtube led to a local maximum where community options that often resulted in better transcriptions are now unavailable and everything is kind of meh.

I know about issue trackers that store issues inside a git repo and are thus clonable. Is there a variant of that that can “pull” issues and PRs from GitHub and other forges into the repo-issue format?

I really wonder what kind of implications this will have for the collective safety model in this space. Things like DMs, follower-only, blocks, federated deletes etc are dependent on correct implementation of those things.
These are things that depend not only on the local software working well, but also the remote one.
Seems like fully vibecoded instance software could lead to a massive federated whoopsie.

This is a really good thing! Better UX for logging in on decentralized / federated networks would alleviate one of the big papercuts of places like Mastodon.
We've been weaning ourselves off ordering things from Amazon, so my wife went and ordered something big from a different retailer, who was actually advertising it at a lower price than Amazon. Well, after a week of waiting for the item to ship, it suddenly just arrived. Turns out the order was fulfilled through Amazon anyway.

This is also absolutely true for software localization.
Translation tools are useful when I’m in charge of how I use them, and when I have contextual hints to help me interpret them.
But when a piece of software is localized exclusively using machine translations, not only are the resulting translations of poor quality (yes, even when done with LLMs — I’d even argue that they’ve gotten worse with LLMs), but also, as a user, I end up at a loss as to how to deal with them, except by switching the app back to English (if the option exists).
Suffice it to say that you’ve massively failed at your localization mission if the result is so bad that you’ve made me fall back to a language that I don't natively speak.

I have the impression that primarily anglophone people don't read as much translated literature, because so much good literature already exists in their language, so this issue may not be as familiar within that demographic. As someone who did not grow up anglophone, I can tell you there is a world of difference between a good and a bad translation even when done by humans. Machine translations are not even on the scale.

If you’re not in the design/tech world, trust me when I say this is a big step for the fediverse. The W3C establishes the standards used for the internet.
