What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Was out biking the other day and saw a "Thank You Teachers!" banner. That got me thinking--in the whole history of computing has anyone, anywhere ever made a "Thank You Coders!" banner?

The closest I can even think of might be a picture of the coders who saved Healthcare.gov that appeared on the cover of Time magazine. Drawing a blank outside of that.

Release v3.3.3 of Ktistec

Todd Sundsted @toddsundsted@epiktistes.com

I have started work on a Mastodon-compatible API layer intended to support the many Mastodon front-ends available. It is incomplete and requires an explicit build flag to enable, but what's there (the main timeline) already works with the official Mastodon app, Tusky, and Phanpy.

Here's the full changelog:

Fixed

  • Editor focus now stays in the editor after the first draft is saved. (fixes #139)
  • Filter settings instructions. (fixes #135)

Changed

  • Improved consistency of mini button colors.

As always, check out the full diff for the complete details.

I have the impression that primarily anglophone people don't read as much translated literature, because so much good literature already exists in their language, so this issue may not be as familiar within that demographic. As someone who did not grow up anglophone, I can tell you there is a world of difference between a good and a bad translation even when done by humans. Machine translations are not even on the scale.

From what I've observed, people who claim that LLMs can replace artists don't understand art, people who claim that they can replace musicians don't understand music, people who claim that they can replace writers don't understand literature, and people who claim they can replace translators don't rely on translations. If I had a button that would erase LLMs from the world but it would take machine translations away (which is a false dichotomy anyway), I would absolutely still press it.

Dear Fedi friends,

I'd like to put together a list of people who are publicly resisting / calling out LLMs and AI slop.

Why? I enjoy reading my Fediverse feed in topical lists and I need something to counteract the unrelenting AI hype I see in the media.

Do you have any recommendations?

So far, at the top of my list I have:

@timnitGebruTimnit Gebru (she/her) @emilymbenderProf. Emily M. Bender(she/her) and @alexhanna of @DAIR

plus @cwebberChristine Lemmer-Webber @jaredwhiteJared “Indie Social Web” White and @tante

Anyone else to recommend who advocates for ?

@_elenaElena Rossini 📍 FOSDEM @timnitGebruTimnit Gebru (she/her) @emilymbenderProf. Emily M. Bender(she/her) @alexhanna @DAIR @jaredwhiteJared “Indie Social Web” White @tante I would clarify also that I am not quite in terms of AI tech, but I am definitely opposed to the *AI industry* and this hype wave. There may be various useful things from this tech, but the net version of things with it being forced upon society right now in this hype wave is that everything is getting much worse, and sickeningly so.

Several more pieces need to be added to the puzzle to make "AI" tech more useful, and I'm also simply opposed to a direction in society that dismisses and devalues creative endeavors, which a lot of this hype is putting at the center of itself. Creativity is what makes life largely worthwhile. I'm not willing to give that up.

I have no problem with OpenImageDenoiser in Blender, which speeds up renders through machine learning, and in no way devalues creativity. But something which made it so I just typed a few words into Blender and it did all my artwork for me, I would oppose.

@PurplePurple :verified:
It's me, I am that senior engineer! I often see the most mishaps occur with junior devs that haven't learned enough to understand the codebase pushing code that they don't understand. And then when asked for justification for why they approached something a certain way, I get mixed responses and reverts.

Juniors also suffer here because they don't learn the code if they're just believing what AI says about the code. genAI is often woefully incorrect about what certain code is doing, and with how big enterprise codebases often are, there's no way it can paint the picture as well as a dev that's been working in that code (without any AI) for years. The juniors either fail to thrive as a result, or take a lot longer to come around to the realization that genAI is actually slowing them down.
