The Daily Wire has a piece out scaremongering about DIY HRT for adults. I'm not going to link to it, you can find it if you choose. They're trying to push for the FDA to go after people doing DIY HRT.

But much worse is this:

4th Circuit Rules That States Can Compel Trans Adults To "Appreciate Their Sex" Via Care Bans erininthemorning.com/p/4th-cir

The really scary bit:

> The court also took a significant step toward ruling that laws targeting transgender adult care would be constitutional. In a footnote, the court states, "While Skrmetti involved sex-change treatments for minors, disagreement among experts about the efficacy and necessity of transgender surgeries extends to treatment of gender dysphoria in adults."

In 2015 I was on a beach in Hawai'i helping build the prototype of what became Signal. I argued that the app needed pseudonyms because abusers know their victims' phone numbers. I lost the fight that day. History proved me right, and Signal would move to usernames under @Mer__edithMeredith Whittaker's stewardship.

In this new essay, I trace the line from Barlow's Declaration of Independence of Cyberspace through smart-home forensics, metadata killings, and Archive Team's non-consensual Tumblr scrape to ask: when did we decide that a jpeg is a photograph, that a profile is a person, that storage is memory?

The answer involves a boat off Honolulu, the early days of Signal, Iran's missiles over Amazon's Dubai AWS facilities, and the communities already building for a world where the server goes dark. This is an essay about infrastructure, memory, archiving without consent, and what we lose when we mistake the filesystem for memory.

It is also the angriest and most personal text I've ever written. I'm furious, and you should be too. We bet an entire civilisation on a brutal and unreliable stack. Now, fate has come to collect that wager.

California has a lot to fucking answer for.

A young man seen from behind, leaning on the railing of a sailboat. He's wearing a light blue t-shirt, looking out over deep blue Pacific water toward a hazy Honolulu skyline in the distance. The sun is bright and warm on his skin and the back of his neck. Above him, a weathered green canvas canopy. The boat's rigging, ropes, and a small wooden box are visible to his left. The water is calm with small ripples catching the light. January 2015.

The notion of a broken clock being sometimes right is based on a gross misunderstanding of what information is.

A clock that always shows the same time is never right, even in the moments of the day when the time happens to be what it shows, because you don't gain any information about what time it is by looking at the clock.

This reasoning also applies to chatbots. If you can't tell whether what you have been given is useful information unless you alreay know the information, then you haven't been given useful information.

Do you think I want to do this?

Do you think I want to be this angry about where technology is going? Screaming every day about a barren future the elites want more than life itself?

I used to love computers. I loved creating with them. I want to again.

This technology steals joy. Don't let it.

If you've ever wondered what :Fediverse: means, it's the logo of the Fediverse!

There is no central authority to decide an official logo, but :Fediverse: is by far the most commonly used logo and most widely accepted.

The designer of the logo uploaded high quality versions of it to Wikimedia Commons:

➡️ commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fil (colour)

➡️ commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fil (monochrome)

Fediverse projects often use this as the basis for their own logos by tweaking it a bit.

There isn't a blog post I can link to, but apparently "experts" who have written to Grammarly about its new "expert review" feature have been told that they are rolling it back and rethinking it. I hope they rethink it right into the ground.

Hello. I got asked to write a little piece for QX Magazine about growing up queer, the impact that has on my writing, and on how we all sometimes feel like we're from elsewhere.

I'd love for you to read it.

"The Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention and Human Security is releasing this third Red Flag Alert for the USA related to the Trump Administration’s anti-trans initiatives, which have continued to expand nationwide since our last Red Flag Alert (RFA) on this subject. Over the eight months since the second RFA’s publication, the Republican Party’s anti-trans agenda has radicalized and continued to intensify. [...] The Administration has moved from identifying transgender people as a threat to the family and to the nation’s military prowess to claiming that transgender people constitute a cosmic threat to the spiritual health of the nation and the greatest direct threat to U.S. national security in the world."

My takeaway on the current state in Canada is:

- An OS can mandate age collection (as long as it stays on device)

- Mandating such collection will face issues.

- Deployment of an OS that mandates age collection could be an issue

- Any attempt to use that collected data will face issues (especially if developers are required to be deemed to have collected it)

Wishing I installed 3-4 more solar panels when I got this system installed. I have the roof space for it but didn't bake in enough redundancy. Probably going to be painfully expensive to have 4 more panels added at this point.

"If you want to improve the model's output, you can write skill files with more specific instructions!"

"Oh wow so like a file that tells the computer to do exactly what you want?"

"Yep!"

"You're never gonna believe this."

Which was really fucked up to see: These folks actually want to protect their organizations from burning a lot of resources on bullshit instead of fixing actual problems that help the workers _and_ the organization. And they have to actively fight management who got their brains ruined on linkedin.

But: If you have any chance to speak to unions/workers from different domains and organizations do so.
It's fascinating how
a) different organizations are and operate
b) they all end up with the same handful of structural problems
