I find the tension concerning the use of AI tooling in the open source community interesting.

On the one hand, here we have a community who believe code should be openly shared and can be used for any purpose; that's encoded in the license.

The only difference of opinion is whether the license should enforce this openness.

But there's also a very strong reaction by many in the same community to training AI on open source code.

Emotion is a large part of both beliefs: wanting to use open source, or against training AI on it. Emotional reactions are legitimate. There must be an underlying believe system that evokes both.

I can see this as "rage against the system" except that many of the same people do not seem to react as angrily if open source code is used by that same system in other ways. Even free software purists accept this reuse, as long as the source remains open.

Perhaps it's that this use of open source source code was never expected: you'd either reuse its functionality OR learn from it as a human. Machine learning doesn't fit that.

But yes, if a server of a user who is in the group has implemented it wrong, on purpose or by accident, it will be publicly available to all on the server....

but: people want to have privacy.
so I don't agree with your post. I think it's really wrong!

We want people to leave Facebook + Insta, where they can say, who should be able to see a post. and that's something we need in the Fediverse too.

I've nicknamed the weekend 'AI-free time'. I don't know if is going to cause a revolution in the IT industry or not, but by Friday, I'm certainly tired of hearing about it. I use the weekend to recharge before hearing about it again on Monday.

literally every fediverse server also acts as one, and if you are so worried about privacy, perhaps a public focused protocol like this isn't the best option.

we need to do better if we want people to actually join and keep using this, the few loud voices that argue against progress must be ignored if we want to be taken seriously.

Záměr vytvořit evropskou alternativu k obřím sociálním platformám je jistě oprávněný. Hrozí však, že skončí přesně tím, proti čemu se vymezuje. Skutečným řešením by měla být podpora vzniku systému postaveného na dělbě moci.
