What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

RE: mastodon.social/@hynek/1162235

This "friendly fire" point is really important. I am doing my best (and not always succeeding) to maintain empathy and kindness for LLM users in my critique, but this is *particularly* important for people that I like 75% agree with on LLMs. It's emotionally exhausting but we all *really* need to double down on that effort regardless, because all we have at this point is persuasion and nobody getting yelled at is getting persuaded.

I learned a technique to avoid spending too much time in front of the computer after dinner. Basically, I decided that as soon as I need to go pee, I shut it down. It works. Except then I turn it back on because “just one more thing…”

Meta spent seven years telling us they were working on true end-to-end encryption across all their various messaging apps... and finally rolled it out in 2024. And then less than three years later, they're shutting it off for Instagram? What? www.androidpolice.com/instagram-is...

Instagram to discontinue end-t...

I have to confess something: My dayjob is as a build engineer in a very large C++ project with somewhere north of four million compiles per day. On any given day, I'm picking bits and pieces of the GCC or DistCC codebases out of my beard after work.

I've also been using Gentoo as my daily driver for 19 years. And I only set up CCache for it today. And because I apparently hate myself, I put the cache on a CephFS mount. Let's see how that goes.

What I'm listening to today: "Writtin´ Rhymes", Timbaland and Magoo

This album dropped in the aftermath of clique co-leader Missy Elliot's "The Rain" going off like a bomb, and had like three huge hits on it, but basically no track on this album misses so I want to play you one of the lesser tracks that never got radio play. Timb and Missy became such huge multidecade cultural forces it's easy to forget when they were *hungry*, just obscure kids who produced for Alliyah

What I'm listening to today: "The Party Don't Stop", Mia X

This is it: The greatest track No Limit ever created. Their in-house production shop ("Beats by the Pound") as their name implies were all about *quantity*, but when they cared they could deliver pure gold, deliciously cheesy like those cover photoshops. This track is perfect, a joyous block party. And Foxy Brown's here, because like, OK, it's 1997, something incredible is happening, of course Foxy Brown's here.

English speakers of the fedi. In a software with the interface in English, Reading a menu with verbs such as Save, Open, Close, Edit, Format etc., do you read them as imperative (an order: "do this") or as an infinitive (the "base form" of the verb, like "to do this")?

Are you a native speaker or have English as a second language?

Not to toot my own horn as they say but damn this feels rewarding to see the hell thread I started thanks to @scan's reveal has resulted in the direct action of Open Source Collective dropping Persona. If we see something that feels off, we need to call that shit out! And this sort of action has results. It works! I knew from the bottom of my heart that I wasn't alone in my feeling of `wtf` when seeing that they were using Persona. And I didn't hesitate to shout into the void of the fediverse.

soon nicolium will not have any redux code left. i will probably make a 0.1.0 soon after. 1.0.0 will give you no tailwind, proper multi-account support and the deck.

i want to start doing versioned releases because then i can do release announcements and display changelog summaries in the app

there have been some questions about my tattoo and what it signifies, and what that means for my campaign.

to be clear: it is a product of its time and of peer pressure. i am not the same person i was when i got a full back tattoo of christopher walken's face from the vhs box art of the prophecy.

I think something useful may come out of all this AI stuff and modern computers may finally be able to catch up with computers of the 80s.

Back when I worked at IBM for a year you could easily orchestrate multiple applications on mainframes using Rexx. It was common for applications to provide a Rexx interface. On other platforms over the intervening years we got things like Applescript and .net and variations but I find those all to be nightmarish. But MCP is pretty easy and now every application and its pet dog provides (or will provide) an MCP port. So finally my dream will come true and everything will be scriptable with actual programming languages and actual documented interfaces rather than hacks (like expect - remember expect?).

(Of course we may be beyond the time when anyone cares about scripting applications like this...)

I've tweaked the template header, so that I have some fedi bits working the way that I want them.

Now for a bit of css tinkering, so that I can have a minimalist theme with dark mode support...

I'm not sure that I can suppress descriptions on the index page, but I will have a poke around.
