Medical elderly stuff

Still a little in shock. Yesterday in the morning I dragged my neighbour of 86 to his GP’s office because we didn’t get anyone on the line, and I felt like a ‘Karen’ - then dragging him immediately afterwards to the hospital for a blood test.
Two hours later he got a housecall from a GP who called an ambulance because of his blood test results!

All in all I spent 10 hours with him yesterday (6h in hospital) and luckily no blood clot but possible emphysema.

A bittersweet end to an exciting launch week!

Today was my last day as Astro Docs Lead. I'm so proud of the docs our community made, & honoured I had the chance to lead them.

I'm open to new adventures in docs, education, or community leadership. So, if you've liked learning, using or contributing to Astro, or just being a part of our community... maybe part of that came from me! And maybe I can bring that to your project, or a project you know!

When the anti-FOTUS combat veterans let the satire loose.

“After a squad of irregular Iranian fighters breached the perimeter of his base in the region, Marine Cpl. Brian McVeigh heroically dove on a grenade to save the Dow Jones Industrial Average from falling below 50,000, sources confirmed today.” - The Duffel Blog

RE: mastodon.social/@hynek/1162235

This "friendly fire" point is really important. I am doing my best (and not always succeeding) to maintain empathy and kindness for LLM users in my critique, but this is *particularly* important for people that I like 75% agree with on LLMs. It's emotionally exhausting but we all *really* need to double down on that effort regardless, because all we have at this point is persuasion and nobody getting yelled at is getting persuaded.

I learned a technique to avoid spending too much time in front of the computer after dinner. Basically, I decided that as soon as I need to go pee, I shut it down. It works. Except then I turn it back on because “just one more thing…”

Meta spent seven years telling us they were working on true end-to-end encryption across all their various messaging apps... and finally rolled it out in 2024. And then less than three years later, they're shutting it off for Instagram? What? www.androidpolice.com/instagram-is...

Instagram to discontinue end-t...

I have to confess something: My dayjob is as a build engineer in a very large C++ project with somewhere north of four million compiles per day. On any given day, I'm picking bits and pieces of the GCC or DistCC codebases out of my beard after work.

I've also been using Gentoo as my daily driver for 19 years. And I only set up CCache for it today. And because I apparently hate myself, I put the cache on a CephFS mount. Let's see how that goes.
