1. The Foyer

A gentleman arrives at the manor. He is being greeted by the manor’s butler who is about to escort him upstairs. The gentleman arrives after lunchtime; he is not here to feast but picks the time when all the family members visit for the holiday.

This is a first room from a commissioned piece and the story is to explain my thoughts behind the characters. I will share the rooms one by one.
It's an illustration of a foyer with two characters looking at each other. There's a shorter man with a cane and luggage beside him and a taller man who is a butler. The room is small and an arched door at the back with the stairs. There are different wooden furniture pieces around around the room and a framed botanical drawing. The room is mostly beige and green.

- in ,
- Android only

I think people put their websites behind cloudflare for the same reason a startup with like seven customers uses kubernetes and AWS or whatever instead of a raspberry pi in the closet: they're fucking ignorant, and have no understanding of the kind of scale those things are needed for.

I truly don’t understand vibe coders; I can’t bear the idea of letting the first pass junk that I got out of this stand as something with my name on it.

Did it get me a good start? Yes. Did I need to revise everything from the design and docs through the naming and implementation? Also yes.

🏳️‍⚧️ Looking for: Movies featuring, about, or made by trans people

  • They can feature a trans character/be about a trans person, a trans actor, or are written/produced/directed by a trans person.

  • They can also be popularly-theorized to be transgender, such as Gwen Stacy in Into the Spider-Verse. (Note: "popular," here, means "made it into a news article")

  • They can be in any language, and they can be short films.

  • I'll take any genre, including historical, musicals/stage plays, and documentary/docudrama (regardless of their quality).

  • I don't want any PragerU bullshit (using our genuine, real-life stories as Conservative propaganda). Other than that, I'll take any quality of movie/writing/depiction. (So, something like She's The Man or Emelia Perez would be okay under this ruleset, despite them both being, y'know, bad movies)

Off the cuff, we already have:

  • I Saw the TV Glow
  • The Matrix quadriology
  • The Peoples Joker (i think we have some of Vera Drew's other projects)
  • V for Vendetta
  • Eternals
  • The Prince
  • Nimona

(We also have Twin Peaks, and the Spider-Verse movies)

(i also have Tron, and have A Clockwork Orange on my to-do list, so Wendy Carlos gets in here too)

My purpose for this is to make use of an external HDD, in order to have a dedicated backup.

I have a lot of cranky old-man gripes about AI but I think one of my crankiest is the loss of personality in code. Cracking open a new code base is always a delight. Experienced engineers have different styles that I always learn things from. In the future I see nothing but a sea of averaged boringness. You can't stop what's coming.

Trying to wring some useful insights out of the roiling AI discourse: today I want to talk a little bit about Senior Engineer Essentialism. As with many AI Coding things, this is not a *new* problem, but it is now a *worse* problem.

According to my hazy recollection, circa 2012 we started seeing a rash of forgettable blog posts about "what it really means to be a senior software engineer".

There is no such thing as a senior software engineer. 🧵

@glyph my title got unexpectedly upgraded to ‘senior’ when I started at my current employer, after trying and failing to get promoted at the previous job. I’ve got ~10 years more experience than some coworkers who had the title before I did. But they had several years more experience with parts of the tech stack (and conversely I’ve done a bunch of other stuff that not everyone else has, which is useful too).

It’s at least taught me not to set too much store by the adjective, anyway.

Americký herec Sean Penn, který v neděli v nepřítomnosti dostal svého třetího Oscara, opět navštívil Ukrajinu. Setkal se s ukrajinským prezidentem Volodymyrem Zelenským, aby vyjádřil svou podporu zemi bránící se ruské invazi, napsala agentura AFP.

@fsfFree Software Foundation Epson makes a series of printers that are popular in Latin America. They have refillable ink tanks, and are color ink-jet printers, allowing a user to, with periodic maintenance, print indefinitely. I have one, and I love it. I also recently found how to "hack" my second-hand brother color laser printer by accessing the "hidden" menu and resetting the page counter. I like the article, and I agree that pushback from we, the people, can make a difference in the abusive, anti-consumer big-tech behavior.

If a company changes a policy after you buy it, you should be allowed a full refund if desired. I am so tired of companies constantly changing rules. The rules that were in place when you bought the product should remain in place. New rules for new buyers.

The "I accept" is never a choice, it's accept or lose access to this thing you bought and supported.
