steam deck has been probably the best thing that happened for my recreation in years

  • i can use it comfortably while in bed, when i'm in too much pain to do much of anything else
  • it lets me play the dozens of games i bought over the years only to never touch
  • it runs linux, goddamnit (positive)
  • it doesn't require me to manually poke winetricks ever, goddamnit (negative) (positive)

Anyway, I have no objection to DLSS 5, and to the best of my knowledge there's no principled objection to it out there other than "NVIDIA bad," which yes, NVIDIA is bad. But that's not about DLSS in particular.

They're muddying the waters to soften critique of the uniquely and abjectly terrible shit that they're doing, and I don't intend on helping them do so.

애초에 의도가 있나? 생성형 AI의 랜덤성에 기초한 모델링, 그래픽 변화에 그 어떤 의도가 있나? 의도가 있다면 그건 AI의 의도인가 저 기능을 개발한 사람의 의도인가. 만약 사람의 의도라면 그걸 의도라고 할 수가 있나? 오로지 기술적 랜덤성에 의해 모델링이 원래의 아트에서 먼 사실적 그래픽으로 변하는게? 게임은 그래픽이 전부가 아니고, 그래픽은 사실적 묘사가 전부가 아니다. 그걸 이해하지 못했으니 저걸 자랑스럽게 테크데모로 올리는거겠지.

개인적으로 모드를 깔고 게임하는걸 선호하지 않는다, 불편함 역시 게임의 일부라고 생각하기 때문이다. 캐릭터 모델을 바꾸는 모드는 개발자, 특히 아트 직군에서 일한 분들에 대한 예의 차원에서 사용치 않는다. 물론 모더의 입장에서는 모더의 선호도가 있어서 그럴 수 있다는것 또한 인정한다. 캐릭터 모드도 완전히는 아니지만 어느정도 이해할 수 있다. 거기에 모드의 개발 역시 게임을 개선하려는 모더의 의도가 들어간 것이라 그것을 깎아내리고픈 생각은 추호도 없다.

Happy to share a project I have been working on: a new visual identity for Vinyl Cache!

Installed in front of a web server, it makes websites faster to load.

The new logo stems from a simple concept: Vinyl Cache protects the server just like vinyl film protects what it’s applied on.

The symbol combines a solid block representing the website and a translucent flexible layer as the cache. Together, they form a V monogram, along with a customised wordmark.

I keep seeing articles like this, about how people choosing to drink less is hurting bars and restaurants, and it's almost always framed as people, especially younger generations, don't like to drink.

They never seem to bring up the fact that a cocktail is like $20 now unless you go to a really divey dive bar. It's the same kind of reporting they on how no one goes to the movies anymore. It's always about changing habits, and never that movie tickets just cost a lot now.
